That wont make any difference, the problem the OP is having is the flakey client mode connection to the xbox, - how the natting to the internet happens will not affect that, nor will what is dishing out IP addresses.
I would be suggesting taking the current gear out into the yard and pouring turp over it and burning it but I have a feeling that isnt what they are looking for.

It's possible that a reconfiguration of the network layout may help "route" around the issue - helping to stop the client mode be less flakey. (Maybe ... )

Fully agreed on this sentiment - although now I can claim not to be the first to suggest it ;-)
I have found the problem. I assigned the wireless router an ip outside of the range of the adsl router. It works perfectly. I am able to share files from the laptop to the desktop and I can ftp into the xbox wirelessly.
