Just before I apply the ppp ip extension another quick question:

So that means if I used the modem and router straight I'd use the LAN port on the back of the router to connect my pc into the system, but after I apply the ppp ip extension I go back to using the WAN port on the router, with static ips instigated by the router (not DHCP from the modem - which the half bridging will disable)

How am I doing?

Darn - back to the drawingboard: reset the modem and update settings again so I can get online to check what I did wrong.

I'm guessing that I have some settings wrong in the router: when I check the ppp ip extension box and save settings etc I then can't connect via the router online (and because of the ppp ip extension choice I can't connect online directly through the modem)

In fact I can't seem to connect to the router once I've checked the ppp ip extension box.

So I need to check I have everything set up correctly in the router first.

Soooo..... currently I have the router set up using Gargoyle, and with quotas in place

This is wired through to the modem, which ISN'T in half bridge / ppp ip extension mode

Currently my computer is wired via the switch thingy through to the back of the router, all other users are wireless to the router

We can ALL access the internet. (the modem and the router have diff ip addy's) but I can not access the modem to check quotas etc.

I thought that the modem and the router were supposed to argue about things if the modem wasn't in half bridge. They seem to be playing together ok at the moment.

Am I missing something in this equation?

It will mostly work like that but you may run into some problems because you have NAT (network address translation) on the modem and NAT on the router aka double NAT.

If you google "double NAT" you will get a better explanation of some of the problems.

But some things that typically don't work well behind double NAT include things that use UPNP or NAT-PMP to open ports eg: hosting games, msn file transfers, utorrent etc.

If you want to have another go at the half bridge setup, it's often useful to break down the steps:

1: Start with the modem connected to the phone but not yet connected to the router
2: Connect your PC to a modem lan port
3: Login to the modem admin ui and enable ip extension
4: Wait :)
5: You machine should be assigned the external ip address (from your ISP) via DHCP from the modem (ie: modem is half bridged to your PC rather then the router)
6: Check the internet works

If that's all good, part 2...

1: unplug your PC from the modem
2: Connect modem to the router wan port
3: Connect your PC to one of the router switch/lan ports
4: Login to the router admin ui
5: Check the WAN connection status, it should be assigned the external ip address from the ISP via dhcp from the modem
6: Check the internet works

After half bridging the modem, then having to restart it, that part worked.

Then the router needed resetting and restarting, and for good measure I threw in a restart on the computer ;) And the router was working properly - I could log in to it.

The restrictions and quotas are all set up now, and seem to be working so far :)

Just a quick update for all those who were worried about our home network ;)

Modem and router all ok, restrictions and quotas in place, one student has just hit 100% of his 4GB allowance and knows that I will be charging him $10 for another 2GB - he was in the kitchen waving his $10 around before he hit the limit ;)

I'd just given him the router address so he could see how much / quickly he was using his data! ;)

These German and Asian students have no idea how much data they use nor how expensive it is here in EnZed until this happens :D
