DonGould: I do agree with the comment about getting a cable co rather than sparkie though. A guy who does this 10 times an hour might cost twice as much an hour, but will do it in 10% of the time.

We had a sparkie install some data cabling at work. A month later the outlets are still not working. The sparkies have been back a few times and spent many hours attempting to fix it.

A cable co just quoted $8500 to do all the cabling again properly. The lost productivity in the office would easily cover this cost.

Why don't electricians know how to do proper cabling jobs? Seriously its not that hard, follow some basic rules. But tbh the quality of different providers is quite considerable. We had some very average cabling guys in our Auckland office whom were "friends" of one of the workers here. It works but is messy.

Had a professional company in our Wellington office come in and do a spectacular job.

If you use a 'residential' sparkie he'll throw the cables in the same way he does into a wall. It's fast, and nobody has to see it. The only thing thats important are that the ends are made off... even identifying them isn't critical.

Commercial sparkies, or data-cablers are more used to running traceable wiring thats visible and identifiable. More time, more money, better quality.

The old adage applies: You can have any two of the following: Fast, Cheap, Reliable. It's your choice.

The verdict seems to be the same now. I will probably get someone in after xmas to have a look. I have already heard from people on geekzone who can do the job. Can anyone recommend a company that will to a good, tidy job? They will probably end up wiring a cable round the outside of the house.

Depends entirely how you plan on configuring it. Additional AP's will always extend a signal, but you need to know what sort of setup you want to know whether it's a solution or not.

You need to know how good the signal is to where ever you're going to locate the repeater.

Did you even tell us what the existing AP is?

DonGould: If it was me I'd pop into DSE and get a couple. They have a 14 day return policy, so you can at least use them to test out if they're going to work. That would get data in your room.

Be careful with this advise. I've started hearing mention that DSE no-longer have a 14 day no quibble return policy which is a shame it was the main attraction to buying anything from there. I still think a lot of the stores will unofficially do it, but I dont think its a policy any longer.

I think the policy should have worked for them as more stuff would stick than come back, but clearly that has changed.

Getting a powerline adapter would be the ideal option, however as I posted, I really don't know if it will work with the circuit we have in our house.

Dont trust cheap cat cable. trademe is littered with junk stuff too.

edit: it also is listed as STP which is overkill and a right pain to terminate and needs you have shielded patch cables etc.

It's incredibly tricky to terminate STP with RJ45s but OK for punch down. And why do you need STP patch cables also? But yea, not much need for STP in your house. Maybe if you are in a factory running your cable parallel to a 10 billion volt line...
