In way of an update, the little AP works OK for 5Ghz, but 2.4Ghz coverage is dreadful.  

Having cracked it open I think I can see why, the 2.4Ghz antenna is not soldered correctly so it is at an angle to the board.  I'm going to try and fix the thing, see what happens.
