Word of warning: The gen1 cameras are going to be supported on the current version of the NVR software but not future versions.

ShortyNZ: The NVR alone is around $1800-$2K ....

With UBNT gear if you have a spare PC you can configure that as the NVR at no cost, but otherwise they have a little paperback sized PC all preconfigured so operating it is about as complex as operating a router. That'll set you back about $500+GST

Thanks. I have found a NZ company selling Ubiquiti, so that is helpful.

Where are you based? Ubiquiti system would be my choice.

coffeebaron installs security system as well - if you happen to be in upper north island area. (he has done a few excellent jobs for me)

Yeah, he definitely cover Auckland region and do free home visit for quote. He quoted for me ubiquiti, avtech and mobotix systems.

Give him a buzz, and I highly recommend him. (check some other posts as he also install master filter etc)

People in the security industry seem to think that security by obscurity on the internet works.

Dumb s##t I have heard them say.

"They can only connect if they know your IP address"
- They connect to all IP addresses

"Its just a house, its not like its a bank"
- Still works fine for launching a DDOS attack from or using as a proxy when attacking other hosts, when done, just reboot the device and no evidence at all will remain. So you are the one that emailed threats as far as the authorities are concerned.

"Its only a DVR"
- Its a full on reasonably well speced linux machine capable of running any code they choose to get it to download. Much better than a compromised router or lightswitch.

"We have never had a problem with people hacking them"
- Head in the sand. They have also never heard of people bumping locks despite it being all over youtube a few years back with sets available to buy for a few dollars.

If you are looking at a dynamic DNS such as dynDNS, make sure your router is compliant with their specs that include not updating the IP address whenever the modem reboots unless the IP has actually changed.

Static IP addresses can reduce the efficiency of utilising a provider's address blocks and they add a bit of management overhead, so providers tend to charge extra. They also make it easier for hackers to target you so I reckon check that your modem has all the firewall features turned on.

Time to find a new industry!
