Well, after a PAINFUL experience today with Orcon -- which I am tempted to post about in the Orcon forum, but that's another story -- it appears I've been shifted to Telecom's gear, but the speed -- whilst BETTER -- is still a bit underwhelming...?

https://www.speedtest.net/result/1539014381.png

Current stats are:

Statistics -- ADSL
Mode:G.DMT Type:Fast Line Coding:Trellis On Status:No Defect   DownstreamUpstreamSNR Margin (dB):11.0 13.0 Attenuation (dB):0.0 3.0 Output Power (dBm):12.3 7.8 Attainable Rate (Kbps):7008 1180 Rate (Kbps)6976 992 K219 32 R0 0 S1 1 D1 1  Super Frames29993 29991 Super Frame Errors0 0 RS Words0 0 RS Correctable Errors0 0 RS Uncorrectable Errors0 N/A HEC Errors0 0 OCD Errors0 0 LCD Errors0 0 ES Errors0 0
I note that Speedtest thinks I'm a Telecom customer now...?  So, I'm wondering -- if I swap to Telecom Retail (as an ISP) will that make any difference?

As always, appreciate your help! :-)

Hi, for whatever reason your modem is in ADSL1 mode, 11dB downstream attenuation means that once you fix that and most likely sort your house wiring you should get twice the current speed.

Many points to make here...

- Moving to Telecom might make a small difference to the ADSL sync rate, and it might actually be a little slower due to more conservative settings.
- You MIGHT experience better actual browsing and download speeds (although I am hesitant to say you will, because I work for Telecom and might be accused of being biased)
- Your sync speed is still low, despite some interesting stats (0.0dB downstream attenuation!!?!)

Could you PM me your address please? I won't be able to look at your connection in any internal systems, but I can interpret what you're likely to be connected to based on publicly available maps.

Neil G

Downstream attenuation is zero there, 11 is the margin. Should hoon along once that is sorted out.

Doh I read the noise margin as attenuation, not well formatted for easy reading, sounds like the modem is well confused being stuck in ADSL1 and mis trained to get an odd attenuation figure.

Why not?  Is this the whole 'competitors can't so I can't' argument?

It's because access to those systems for end user issues must come through the appropriate Retail Service Provider through the appropriate approved interfaces.

In this particular case, the address and the public telecom wholesale coverage maps told me all I needed to know to determine what sort of equipment he's provisioned off.

Cheers - N

Sorry about the terrible formatting on the stats.  It went IN as HTML but ended up like garbage!

Hi, I take it that ADSL2+ or multimode is enabled in the DSL setup, and you have performed a full reboot so it trains cleanly since the cut over.

I would be interested to know what the painful bit was... Feel free to PM me any details, I am sure we would like to know where we dropped the ball.

<retract>@Talkiet, why would a Telecom retail customer on the same port expect to get a better sync rate when changing from another Wholesale ISP? Telecom retail after all is just another wholesale ISP isnt it?</retract>

Sorry you said different, not better... I should re-read things...

Hi all,

Thanks again for the assistance!

Just updated my router's firmware to be sure I'm running the latest and greatest.  Here's my (various) settings:

And here's the speedtest with the new firmware (still about the same):

Have I got some kind of setting wrong there?

Again, thanks a million!

Hi, my guess is maybe a port rebuild is required, I think Paul is best man to talk to that.

Just a thought, does your modem actually support ADSL2+ ?.

From the screenshot:
https://imgur.com/Z8yDX

It doesn't look like ADSL2+ is an option, only ADSL2 or G.dmt.

If so, that may explain why it's only selecting G.dmt modulation.

You mentioned it's an Asus, but i couldn't see the model number mentioned in the topic anywhere (might have overlooked it!).

Thanks RunningMan -- no I don't think I mentioned the model.  It's a AAM6030VI.  It definitely does ADSL2 -- is 2+ quite different?

I am absolutely happy to upgrade my router as part of this journey (in fact that's how this thread started!) though we've uncovered so much more (hey, at least my speed has more than doubled since the cabinet change -- which is great, but seems I get double it again!)

Cheers!

Had a quick look at the manual could not find a spec sheet (in english anyway) and it seems its ADSL1 only, I assume its one of those modems that could also do ADSL2 but not 2+ there were a number at around at the transition.

Bottom line is the attenuation is indicating it should be good, very good, but its only doing G.DMT (ADSL1) which kind of suggests modem problem. Get yourself a TP-Link.

Just one other point, make sure its got the lattest firmware. Also once that installed then might need to look at your house wiring, this may also be an issue but no ADSL2+ is the current issue.

Whats odd though, did you not mention getting 13Mb/s before the cabinet?
