Why not just set your TD-W8960N to WEP? If you are going to add another AP to your network with only WEP encryption, there is no point having your TD-W8960N set to anything stronger unless you somehow isolate or restrict what can be accessed via the second AP.

As per this article, and my experience with other equipment, you can not use 802.11n with WEP.

Based on a colleagues experience I've decide to purchase a TP-Link WA701ND, which I hope to configure as AP client bridge, if not, repeater, with WEP (b/g).

Leaving my TD-W8960N in WPA2 (b/g/n)

if I want gigE, are there any advantages of the TD-W8960N + TL-SG1005D vs TL-WR1043ND? EDIT: Err, nevermind I am blind, the latter is not a modem.

I've had to reboot the TP-Link TD-W8960N three times since I bought it last week, this is very problematic. Have others upgraded the firmware to resolve this or do I just have a faulty unit?

Note: The Telecom "tested" the connection and reports fine. The previous Netgear never need to be rebooted for aDSL connections (it had a completely different set of issues).

Definitely update the firmware if it's not running the last/latest, early versions had some issues.

Upgraded firmware, still dropping the aDSL connection every few days, I'll take it back to PB Tech this weekend. grrrr.

A big +1 for this device. Replaced a Netgear device (that was three times the price) with this and it (so far at least) is great. Addressed a lot of problems (which until the replacement I thought were issues with the end-points) and has great signal around our home (two story brick and tile with cinder block internal walls).

With the subseqeunt aDSL drop out and failure to reconnect I would have to subtract my original comment.

I also ended up getting one of these (TP-Link TD-W8960N) after reading this thread and it seems pretty solid so far (only 8 days in though) - I'll have to keep an eye on it...

wifi performance is a lot better than the thomson it replaced though, and speedtest results, while not any "faster" seem more consistent\stable.

Just a thought. If its not to late.
Before taking it back it would be interesting to try it at a different location, like a mates place and see if it still has trouble keeping a xDSL connection. If it still drops and not reconnect then it is definitely a problem with the unit. If it does stay connected then it may indicate you are getting "noise" on your phone line or something. Which may have also been effecting your Netgear modem it replaced.

The 3Com and Netgear were fine on aDSL side. 3Com did not have reconnect feature, so if Telecom reset the connection it required manual intervention, however the Netgear could reconnect. The Netgear issue was with UDP traffic bridging between WiFi and Ethernet.

Sounds like a faulty unit, if the 3Com and Netgear don't drop regularly neither should the TP Link. I would try the TP Link at another place to double check it's stability. Could be power related issue, you have a lot of devices, did you have it plugged into a UPS?

I guess you will be trying a Draytek Vigor 120 or Netcomm next?

I visited PB Tech today but the only aDSL/WiFi n/Gb Ethernet device they had was the Netgear one I have already discarded. Does anyone know of a device in this class available in NZ?

I've put the TP-Link on the Christmas lights timer, set to go off at 1am and back on at 6am. It can stay connected for a couple of days so hopefully a daily restart will keep me going until I source a replacement.
