You may need a second router (I'm assuming the Netgear has routing capabilities) for when the R700 goes down.

But yeah you can use a routers lan ports as switch - after all that's what it is - a switch. No need to change any settings just plug in LAN devices and go.

I think someone said this already (have not read all posts) but that wifi repeater setup is killing your already fragile network, also NAS might be dragging it down too depending on the gear.

What NAS server do you have - not D-Link hopefully. :)

I had a client with a VPN going from his office to the house PC using a NAS box as the server. He wanted to "work from home" on weekends... his 17yo grandsons idea...lol unbeknownst to me. This was over 40mb/s VDSL :D

It would literally take 10 mins for desktop icons to appear after loading windows on the office rigs.....(apparently local profiles were stored on the NAS as well :) ).

Fibre would not have helped anyway as the DNS-320 only supports SATA II, basically rendering the Gigabit LAN ports unusable. Sorry went off on a tangent there.

A powerline adapter may be your best hope for multi-story if you can't go cable.....2nd to that would be a wireless bridge imho. But here's what I did recently:

My parents ditched Sky long ago and love Netflix, so I bought them a Chromecast.

They own an enormous 5 bedroom house with a dedicated VDSL jack in the Master bedroom, which ofc is at one end of the house.

The stock 630b WiFi performance is abysmal, so there was a lot of lag while streaming to the TV, not really ideal. I also did not want to get up in the ceiling if it could be avoided..

First I used powerline adapters (NetGear NP508 - avoid) but due to the house having 2 circuit boards the throughput dropped from 600Mbps to 50mbps. Then I messed with access points/mesh but still problems - insulated walls and bad angles etc. All sucked.

Anyway the tl;dr version is is I had a couple of Ubiquiti UAP's leftover from a job.

I attached a UAP -LR on the ceiling, in a pretty optimal spot got, up in the roof & ran 30m of Cat6 back to a GigE switch which I then connected to the 630B - after disabling the wifi.

Now there is one stock router, connected to a one switch, connected to a single Unifi UAP-LR via 30m of Cat6 .

The improvement is night & day.

That single UAP reaches all corners in the home (tried regular UAP first but signal too weak), casting to the TV is just as good as via HDMI cable no stutter, nothing. And with 8 devices connected.

The AP isn't even AC it's only 2.4Ghz 300n. 30db helps though... I was very suprised tbh, I did not expect a single AP to perform so well. n

(note, Ubiquiti AP's come with one major PITA - Unifi software which is required to configure UAP's. There's no weblogin).....

I don't know if any of the above helps, but figured I'd relay my experience.... :)
