Hi Cyril,

Thanks for following this up!

I've personally never gotten 13mbps -- my neighbour gets that (and only told me that after I started complaining about speed).  Speedtests I'd done previously though saw 8mbps and 6mbps or thereabouts (certainly better than sub 1mbps, that's for sure!)

I will buy a TP-Link tomorrow, and report back on how I go here!

Even if you just borrow a modem from someone to confirm, but I'd say on the face of it, the modem doesn't do ADSL2+, so just resorts to ADSL (G.dmt).

As far as ADSL (not 2+) sync speeds go, yours isn't that bad, so you should probably see a pretty decent improvement by going to ADSL2+.

That seems to be the primary issue - once that's resolved, as cyril says, might pay to check your internal house wiring to teak the speed up a little more...

Let us know the outcome of a different modem.

Have just bought the new modem (hey, it's $99... worth the risk!) so next couple of days, should know the outcome.  Thanks again, all!

Maelstrom: Thanks RunningMan -- no I don't think I mentioned the model.  It's a AAM6030VI.  It definitely does ADSL2 -- is 2+ quite different?

I am absolutely happy to upgrade my router as part of this journey (in fact that's how this thread started!) though we've uncovered so much more (hey, at least my speed has more than doubled since the cabinet change -- which is great, but seems I get double it again!)

Cheers!

ADSL2 is capable of 1Mbps upstream and about 8Mbps downstream, not that much different from ADSL but has less overhead and supports rate adaptation without resyncing. ADSL2+ gets much faster speeds. Annex L is long reach for ADSL2, so perhaps turn that off if you have any problems with the replacement modem.

I also note that you had previously synced at a slightly slower rate than the attainable and noise margin had dropped by 1dB to 11dB, so there may be house wiring issues causing minor fluctuations. Both ADSL2 and ADSL2+ will simply adapt the speed, so dont need to fix it unless bad enough to cause problems.

Time to find a new industry!

Thanks webwat.  My modem has been dispatched so hoping for some good results tomorrow.

It'll be the most exciting speedtest.net I've ever fired up, methinx! :-D

Let us know what speed the modem syncs at once you get it plugged in...

Great speeds.

Hi just some feedback. Orcon switch me back to Telecom wholesale after Telecom added cabinets to my area and my download speeds are pretty good now.

I used to get 2Mbps and now my download speed is 12Mbps. It took a while but its all sorted now.

Congrats!  I'm hoping more people will benefit from this thread and others like it.  Frankly I still feel a bit mystified that ISPs don't proactively promote the knowledge!?
