I've updated the diagram, with the planned device in red. Any suggestions welcome. The box is real low end, but most of the Linux distros are not too hefty.

Are you asking for a firewall? Or firewall/proxy? Something that intregrates with Windows AD?

Firewall / Bridge router that has a whitelist function for outbound HTTP traffic.

My home "networking" is in a very sad state now, just a mere EEEpc, 1TB hard drive, old hacked thin-client and an Okta Touch for data access.

Feel like it is somewhat simple compaired so some here...

but here is my home network.

Media centre PC - Case Silverstone LC16M with 2 X 80mm AcoustiFan DustPROOF, MOBO Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H, CPU AMD X2 240 under volted, RAM 4 Gig DDR3 1033, HDD 120Gig System/512Gig data, Tuners 2 X Hauppauge HVR-3000, 1 X HVR-2200, Video Palit GT 220, Sound Realtek 886A HD (onboard), Optical LiteOn DH-401S Blue-ray using TotalMedia Theatre Power Corsair VX Series, 450W ATX PSU OS Windows 7 x64

Cable modem goes into the primary 8-port gigabit switch. That has an Apple Airport Extreme hanging off it for 802.11n wireless for the other 2 Macbook laptops and performing DHCP/NAT duties, a 4-port 802.11g wireless 4-port router in the lounge for the media PC and a Wii (Wireless for flatmates ipod touch), a Macbook, an Xbox360, the fileserver which has a Linux VM running on it as the DNS/Web Proxy.

Elsewhere in the house is another 8-port gigabit switch with 2 PC's and a PS3 hanging off it, plus yet another wireless router so my 802.11g devices can connect to it.

I thought 2 gigabit switches, 3 wifi points (2 802.11g and 1 802.11n) and an internal DNS/Proxy server was pretty good for a house with only 3 people in it :)
