Ive a friend wanting to have her new website hosted and her usual provider isnt taking any more sites on (yes, very strange!) but she was recommended Host Gator.  Im looking at the baby plan as it looks like it'll do everything she wants.  Price doesnt seem to bad.  http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml  Anyone have any opinions on them as a company?

I don't use them for my site now, but never had any problems or need to contact technical support.

I use hostgator for my sites, including http://www.headphonereviews.org which gets a couple million hits per month, as well as my professional websites. I find them reliable, with excellent tech support.

I'm also an affiliate, since I was recommending them anyway I figured I might as well make beer money. Use the following discount code when you sign up

gz00000000000

It's good for 25% off your first payment. If you pay for a years hosting you get 25% off the whole year. If you pay for a month you get 25% off the month.

Ok sounds good.. Think we'll end up going with them. Not the cheapest but they seem to have a good rep which is more important :)

Hostgator shared plans cost virtually nothing, they're crazy cheap, especially given the performance and tech support they offer. Their dedicated servers aren't badly priced either, but they're a lot more expensive than shared plans.

Use that coupon I posted for the 25% discount too

Not sure where you are looking but they are one of the cheapest. Only places with shocking service like GoDaddy seem to be cheaper.

GoDaddy is fine as long as you know that if/when something goes wrong it will be a long slow process getting ti fixed.

I have some things hosted with them because they are cheap, when things go wrong they always email you back generic replies that aren't relevant to the issue.

I have found when i call them they fix the issue pretty quickly though.

One of the very few shared hosting providers that can be recommended.

I had a friend using godaddy, their service and support were shockingly bad. Tech support had no idea. The website is a huge mess. I'm even moving all my domain registration away from them, I just can't handle their website any more.

Ive been using Dreamhost now for approx 2 years, been good, no downtime except for occasional email outage but always inform their users of any outages via Twitter etc.

Have been using HostGator for a few years now to host dozens of websites and can't fault them at all.  Their support is second to none!

There's a 40% discount off your first bill for the 4th of July (US time). The first bill can be a month or 3 years.

Use this affiliate link and the code JULY4. Mods, please feel free to delete this post if it's breaks forum rules, and let me know so I don't do it again.
