Can't think of a reason why it would not work. Quadband phones from overseas work just fine on the telecom and vodafone etc networks. Is there a detailed datasheet available?

Friend had a similar gsm device and it was fine on both GSM networks but did need some AT commands to set it all up which it then went and remembered.

Thanks all, looks like I will have to get one.
No datasheets, I had a look at ElecFreaks.com The brand printed on the back of the phone card (which is pretty descriptively screened).

I have a couple of the elecfreaks arduino varients and they are quite nicely made, unlike the fake uno I got off DX where the solder pads were coming off the board like they were held on with the same glue that postit notes use.

Im very tempted to get one now

No I didn't get one, cost vs function and a Raspberry Pi won the day.

It's on the wishlist and I just need a reason to have it vs just having it.

Ah ok, I have the raspberry pi on the list for not getting for cost vs function.

However the $20 phones from the warehouse have me thinking that might be a viable option if I can find a serial connection to them somewhere.
