So after over a year of waiting (6 months of which was late), LIFX bulbs are finally coming off the production line.  Will be pretty interesting to see an unbiased comparison of all the options available now (Limitless, Hue, LIFX).  Hmm, might have to pick me up some Limitless as a comparison too.

Looks like they've done some pretty awesome work on it in the time it's been delayed.  Fingers crossed mine show up soon!

There are lots in the market already.

In all fairness, when LIFX was announced it was the first. But then it took them so long to make it to market that they were beaten to the punch by everyone from Philips to Limitless to Random-Chinese-Fabricator.

However, the unique feature of LIFX (which noone else has built so far) is that the bulb contains the bridging equipment, and it does not require an extra box like Hue, Limitless, etc do - the bulb itself connects to your wifi, and creates a mesh network to connect other bulbs to it even when they're out of range.

They've demoed up to 70 bulbs in one mesh all operating in perfect sync so far.

And being manufactured in China I'd say it will not be two weeks before everyone else has the same feature...

They'd be idiots if they haven't patented it and/or picked a reputable manufacturer.

Apple kit is often imitated and sold. There is no such thing as patent and it does not matter if you pick a reputable manufacturer.

Indeed.  But if it's patented, it's going to be dodgy chinese manufacturers that clone it, not Philips or Limitless or other easy targets that do it.  No, they'll sign up for a patent license and go the legit way.

And "no such thing as patent" ... what?
