I'm thinking of buying my first handheld radio/scanner and I am after some advice as to which models / features are worth buying. Budget is upto say $300.

I would like to be able to listen to air traffic control, planes etc especially at events like Warbird over Wanaka. Would also need to cover the usual radio stations so I could listen to commentaries at the cricket. (also curious about eves dropping on umpire/referees communications if possible) ? listen to tv audio

Separate batteries generaly appeals more than build in rechargable units (I dont want to get it out one day and find the battery dead or worry about charging it, at an event).

Happy to buy in nz if only a little more expensive.

I know little/nothing about the technology involved so please be gentle.

A.

I would've said the uniden 92xlt but it doesn't do radio stations.

Shame, because I have one 6 months old and I don't use it. (but I'm in oz)

With the Digital switch over concluding this year, you've got less than 6 weeks to listen to TV Audio on a handheld scanner.,
Once its all Freeview you will be SOL
