Am I crazy or is this total BS? 30AH in something that tiny? Everything else available is <10AH, and those ones are heavier.

Those packs are totally overrated by most sellers.

I bought a "15000mAh" one off ebay and the performance was hopeless. Tested the cell on my B6 with a 200mA discharge so very generous to it and it only got 7000mAh. The thing got stupidly hot at its rated 2 amps so that was also not going to help with its usefullness.

Agree, most of these are a total lottery and I am not surprised with seeing rated numbers inflated by 100% or more...

Other things with the same issue on places like DX and Aliexpress

- Lasers
- LED torches and headlamps
- SD cards (speed of cards is made up)

Battery claim is quite a bit different ie:
Nominal capacity: 30000mAh
Capacity range : 20000mAh and above
Actual capacity : 15000mAh

I don't get what it means

Capacity range is used for categorization of the products on DX.

Actual capacity is what they think it is. Still usually optimistic but it is more comparable between things than the BS rating which is nominal capacity.

Meet with a 'battery manufacturer' in Hong Kong some years back who could make batteries of an increased capacity ( to others we had purchased) without altering the size or price....
on further questioning it seemed the solution was simply in printing what we wanted on the outside....

No concept of brand value or reputation...... his or ours

I got some cheap "3000mAh" AA NiMh off ebay that test as about 700. Well they did the first time I did it, used them for a bit and now they get about 300.

Thats the issue with buying from overseas, absolutly nothing other than what paypal give you as far as sorting out misleading and blatent lies.

I would love to see these local peddlers of inflated rating junk get taken to task by the comcom or whatever they are called now. Would be a nice change from them buggering up the telco pricing in NZ and might actually have a positive outcome instead.

Be careful with buying "cheap" external batteries off ebay or DX or Ali etc, because first of all mAh may not live up to actual numbers, and secondly if they are that cheaply made, they may explode in your face if something goes wrong!

I have horribly abused cheap asian 18650 and flat lipo packs and none have exploded on me. They just end up with SFA capacity and in the case of the lipo cells puff up a little bit.

I still wont charge them in the house however ;)

they are nowhere near their rating. i have bought similar stuff before. physics are usually pretty accurate - you can't fit more energy in a similar size/weight other product. treat the capacity by the weight compared to a known reliable power pack
