I have found that those DSE surge protector power boards seem to introduce a static/hissing noise into some audio equipment (the headphone/speaker out port of a laptop and some guitar amp equipment)

Does this sound normal?

Sounds like a ground loop hum. Try somewhere like Jaycar for a Ground Loop Isolator.

Thanks for the info. I have found that the problem is worst when I have my old Dell Inspiron laptop plugged into the power (I have tried three different power sockets). In fact it pretty much goes away when I have it running off battery. So possibly the isolator may be the way to go. Cheers!

Response AA-3086 ground loop isolator (3.5mm jack). For cars, but it says it is usable with laptops.

No problem. I use that in the car with a phone or laptop and also on amps at home. Also there's an RCA->RCA version I've use for a setup or two on the odd occasion.

There are a few different shapes, but they all do the same and targeted at car audio as that is where the most issues are. We use them in stage sound systems where we also connect to PCs and other consumer stuff that are designed on a tight budget.
