Thinking of buying a multimeter out of general curiosity.

Probably use it to measure voltages in computer cables. Current project is to connect a case fan to the screen projector trigger on my AMP so needto check which line is live etc.

What sort of money should I spend ?
Any tips ?

For just measuring low voltage DC a cheap multimeter from Jaycar will be fine. Something like http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=QM1524&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=1060#1 Good price for a catII multimeter - one that can be used to measure mains voltage if needed.

Just something cheap will be fine for that. Dont go too cheap or you will have hardware issues with nasty probes and crap terminals and a rotary mode swich which has erratic contacts, and never have been calibrated on its 10/20 amp range.

Dont use a cheap meter on the mains. Stick to a real one for that. Cheap ones will often arc over internally once they are a bit full of dust etc, or come in from a cold shed to a warm humid house and get condensation.

Just had a quick glance at the specs for this DVM suggested by Aredwood
This is very good for the price.
Make sure that its auto ranging , and has automatic switch off when not in use to save on battery power, and has a buzzer for continuity checks
I use a brand called Fluke for work and is recognised as one of the top brands.
