Looking for a suitable starter RC for my 6yr old son for Xmas, I don't want to go majorly expensive ($50+) but enough for him to have a good experience.
The house we're moving into is far more grass than concrete so needs to be suitable on grass.
We bought a "Rock Crawler" 4x4 style RC car for our kids - these are quite good for young kids because they're not overly fast, so the kids can react fast enough to use them. And they will go over most terrain. I think ours was from Noel Leeming
My son was given one for Christmas last year, runs well, and he's driven it rough. Runs off a rechargeable AA sized battery that goes in the car itself. The kit he got came with the Car Battery and car battery charger. Controller unit then runs off 2 AA batteries.
I think from memory, K Mart stock these Carrera RC cars.
a cheap rc car isnt going to cope at all well on grass...infact just forget it. even my kids 1/10 tamiya monster trucks arent fantastic on grass. hell even my 1/14 brushless racer struggles on grass.grass kills motors because of the huge drag on the cars. if you want to give your kid a decent rc car experience then you need to buy a proper one and not a toy. budget $300.
if buying new this is about the cheapest quality car. it has a proper 6 cell NIMH battery and is pretty srong. ( you dont want the car to break on the first day.) the only mods this car needs is to glue the tires on as they have a silly beadlock system and the tires keep coming off. just sperglue them on. and later down the track some oil shocks from ebay will make it handle MUCH better.
