Hi there, i am looking for people/companies who install IP modules on house alarms so they can be monitored.

I'm aware of safeguard and Recon doing this, but at $300 a pop, i'm not sure if this price is reasonable or not. Are there others that i can try?

AlarmNZ but i suspect it will be around the same price as they need an UPS type unit so that the Router/ONT can be powered in a power outage (as no ONT/Router = no phone line)

Check what cellular monitoring costs from your monitoring guys, was stuff all difference when I last looked at it, and then you are not just replacing one cable outside to cut to disable it with a different cable.

And make sure they don't offer a GPRS module! with Voda switching their network off soon.... it will need to camp on 3G

In terms of cost I was quoted $450 twice so $300 doesn't seem too bad

Ip module costs about 200 or so dollers so 300 installed is not that bad

How much does an alarm cost? I can't believe in this day and age its still like this... Same for "medical monitoring" which is probably most reliable over mobile anyway? People will be rigging up their own security systems using IoT soon in any case...

Depends on the type of alarm. You can buy a new entry level Micron IP capable system in a full kit (with sensors and siren etc) for a little over $300 + GST last time I looked. Something more complex like a Bosch will cost around 3x that.

At the end of the day the single biggest issue with IP based monitoring is you really need to ensure your UFB connection and router are on a UPS. The beauty of a GPRS module is that they're easily powered via 12VDC from the alarm panel.

I don't believe an exact timeframe has been set - and last I heard they were looking at 2018 for voice shutdown while GPRS would still remain for all customers after this. I could however be completely wrong!

And your monitorning company will have a M2M plan for all their sim cards and are not in the habit of making voice calls to the systems so it will all keep working till they finally pull the plug on the network.

If you are cheaping out and self running a sim card in it and relying on it calling you when it trips, then yeah you will have a problem.

AT&T is turning off their GSM / 2G network this year. It has been bought forward by quite a bit so that the spectrum can be used for LTE. I suspect that Vodafone NZ may do similar..

I had a Ethernet and a cellular module using a Bosch alarm, supplied and installed by the vendor - who I prefer not to name, but they're a good sized company. I had no end of problems with communications. I started with cellular only and had issues, that's why they installed Ethernet, and it got worse. In the end, after I asked for a resolution or refund, they took both out and replaced both with a newer cellular module. I don't know if it works any better or simply hides the problems.

AT&T is turning off their GSM / 2G network this year. It has been bought forward by quite a bit so that the spectrum can be used for LTE. I suspect that Vodafone NZ may do similar..

The difference is AT&T desperately need the spectrum for LTE. Vodafone NZ don't need it anywhere as bad.

You'll still see a lot of networks shut down 3G before they shut down GSM as they can refarm the 3G spectrum for LTE and keep GSM for voice.
