Looking for advice for someone else. I know nothing about these, all mine have been the free earphones supplied by the smartphones, haha. So headphones (over the head), he uses it at work to listen to various things to do assessment etc ... in an open environment office. He is looking preferably up to $250 for a pair.

What do you want them for? Listening to Music, work, or gaming.

Do you need just headphones or a mic as well?

Also now have to worry about the source connector. 3.5mm, USB c or lightning?

I really just recommend a cheap pair of senheissers if you are not fussy. Great value for around $40-50 and built quite well.

Yeh I had some HD201's and HD202's. They were both ok. You can get them for about $40 - $50 dollars.

I am now using these, they have a mic and sound amazing, got them for $139 at pb tech about 5 months ago:

A bit nicer than the cheaper senheisers.

If you want something better again then yeh I would look at senheisers, you might find a cheaper Bose model too, I don't know if it will blow the budget or not.

He said can be an multiple connection 3.5mm and USB? But mostly 3.5mm style it is for mostly again listening to computer (generated) audio and maybe some voice recording and the odd music when he is working. He also asked how are they like if you use them for 3hrs, does your ears get hot etc ...? Voice cancellation a good option to have inside a office environment?

Don't buy Bose for Sound quality. They have excellent noise cancelling headphones, which are ok sound quality. If he would consider a second hand pair, the Sen HD650 is an outstanding headphone in that price range.

NAD HP50 also pretty good I am told (But I have no experience).

You need a closed headphone. A comfortable one. Does he have a large head or large ears? Reason is, most are designed for small-average head/ears and big ones get trapped and is very uncomfortable after about 30-60 minutes. I had a $1000 pair of the most amazing headphones ... but it is so heavy and tortured my earfins and strangles my head and falls off if you lie down ... bugger!

I like Audio Technica headphones. You tend to have to import them. I use the A900, an old model, the A900X headband isn't any good. The A500 range is cheaper and almost as good. Otherwise Sony or Sennheiser make decent headphones, just try the ones that fit your budget and see what you like.

If you're willing to buy from Amazon you should be able to get a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50x's around the top end of your budget. Otherwise could consider something like the Sony MDR7506's.

I would highly recommend the ATH m50x but if you have large ears they crush them a bit. Max listing time for large ears - 45-60 mins.

Beyerdynamic iirc (sold them a while ago) were the most comfortable. I'd get DT770 Pro 80Ohm (must be 80 Ohm not the others)

I owned two different versions of the Beyer DT770, from memory the 80 and 250 ohm versions. Both were WAY WAY WAY too bass heavy for me. I like my bass, but that was mental.
