Okay, this issue has been bugging me for months, and every time I try to resolve it I get nowhere.

Ever since I got my Note 8, I have never been able to use Google Assistant to control my Hue lights.  I know what I need to do, but the Google Home app doesn't show me the applicable settings.

When I open the Google Home app, and clock on the Menu, all I see is "Cast screen/audio".  Below that are "Devices" (which are just my Chromecasts), "Account Preferences", "Offers", "How to Cast", "Google Store" and "Help and Feedback."  From everything I've read online, there should be more options at the top than just "Cast screen".

A few guides have suggested changing the language to English (US), but I've tried that and it makes no difference.  I've cleared the app cache and restarted my phone, still makes no difference.  I've uninstalled/reinstalled the Home app, everything is up to date (latest version of Oreo and Google apps), but nothing makes any difference.

Google Assistant works generally - I can bring it up (either by voice or by long press on the home button), and it will search and do other basic functions, but I can't see any way to fix this Home Control issue.

What have I missed here?

Do you have a Google Home or Google Home Mini device on your network? You need one to make this work.

So you can't control Hue lights using an Android phone with Google Assistant?

Could it be the lights are on your 2g network and your phone is on 5g?

I'm pretty sure both are on the same frequency.  I'm at work so can't double check.  But the problems stems with the fact that the app doesn't even show the Home Control settings in the first place.

Stu:

Have a look here.

Thanks for posting that.  I've already looked at that, and there are a couple of issues.  Firstly, that website seems to be about the Google Home devices (i.e. the smart speakers etc) rather than the Google Home app (why can't they name these things something less confusing!?!).  I started a support chat through that page and the support person said they only supported the devices (e.g. Google Home and Home Mini), and directed me to the Google Assistant page, which doesn't have any real-time support - just forums.

Secondly, the fifth step in its instructions is to click "Home Control", but my app doesn't show that as an option, and there doesn't seem to be any explanation why that is.  I'm at work so I can't verify that I'm on the same network as my Hue bridge, but I've tried this several times over the past few months when I was home, and even then I couldn't see Home Control in the Home app.  I'll double check when I go home tonight, but I'm pretty sure it'll be the same.

If it is a case of voice control for Hue only working with a smart speaker-type device like Google Home Mini, then I am quite surprised.  There are plenty of videos on Youtube showing people controlling Hue lights with voice control on their Android phone.

I'm 'saving up' to do this myself at home. As with yourself, I had hoped to just use the app.

As I understand it, once you add an actual Google Home device to your network, you'll see that Home Control in your app. The app apparently only tells the Home Device what to do, and it's the device that does the talking to the Hue API.

You could install Home Assistant on a spare box (Rasberry Pi) and do it that way.

My Google Assistant turns my various things on and off, using Home Assistant integration.

Cheers @muppet. I have a spare Odroid board, if I can find it. Seems it's possible.

I had to change my device from English (NZ) to English (AU) and restart it, wait a couple of hours and then I managed to get Home Control in action.

By 'device', do you mean Android phone or Google Home device?

That was one of the suggestions I discovered from my searches.  I've changed it to English (US) in just about every place I could find, and that was a few hours ago, but it didn't make any difference.  Where specifically did you change the language?  Just want to make sure I haven't missed it somewhere...

Liking the idea of cooking up a DIY 'Home' device using an Odroid or Pi, rather than throwing more money at it.
