I'm interested in an Amazon Fire tablet, essentially as an e-book reader for comics and graphic novels. We're already heavily invested in the Amazon / Kindle / Comixology ecosystem, so a Fire tablet makes sense. Parental controls / Free Time is a big plus too.

From what I can tell, Amazon won't ship them to NZ. Mrs MDF is about to head to Aussie, but Amazon.com.au doesn't seem to stock. Are there any other alternatives I'm missing, or is Youshop / freight forwarding the only option?

Youshop worked for me. Took a while but they turned up. There might be other routes, wouldn't know. No idea if using them in NZ affects Parental controls / Free Time thingy though. See they're US$120. Sometimes they're $100 (for the HD10), but than again they're officially $150. So, if you wait, will they go up, or will they go down...

I did score a Fire 8" for $129 from 1-day a few months ago, though that deal is no longer available.

They do come around fairly frequently, though that doesnt help you for the moment.

It looks like they are out of stock in most regions, and a few articles advising that there probably is a new tablet due for release.

However, the Fire is great for reading, and can sync across multiple platforms ( I catch up some reading during my lunch break at work on a Samsung S5)

Still cant do comics graphic novels on a 8" tablet though - I feel that one looses the scope of the artwork on a small screen, even though you can zoom the panels.

Much of the graphics is interleaved inbetween the panels. It's like looking at artwork through a grid when using a small-ish screen tablet.

One day, there will be a decent non overpriced tablet that has a screen the size of an A4 sheet. Until then, dead-tree reading for me.

YMMV ...
