Normally I wouldn't comment on something like a toothbrush. But there's one feature that makes this brush worthwhile for the kids ...

Bluetooth!

You pair the toothbrush to an app on your phone (Mi Home for Android or IOS) and it will report when they brush, how they brush with history.

The brush is kept in the bathroom downstairs and we can even sync with it from upstairs.

After a week, I didn't need to check up daily as my son seems to be resigned to brush twice a day (it runs for 2 minutes before switching itself off).

It's probably the main reason his teeth have become whiter.

Anyway, it's recommended if you are always chasing your kids to brush their teeth.

Does this record of cleaning include when the kid turns it on, shoves it in his gobb for 10sec and then puts it on the side of the sink and runs back to his game station while it continues to thrash around on the sink edge for the remaining 2min or does it understand the dynamics of being used properly.

Yes ... according to the first screenshot it does do duration and coverage/evenness.

When we got it, I tested by powering on and moved it around randomly. The score was low for the latter metrics. I think the first couple time we did it for a few seconds and no recording was logged.

But who knows how they actually measure it. It looks good enough that you can show your kid that they did a good/average job and challenge them to keep the score high. You got an excuse to show him a dip in the results to get him to brush more thoroughly.

If they figure a way to generate a consistent high score without actually brushing, they are probably a padawan and will fool you on everything else in latter life.

I think my son figured out I used to check he brushed by me checking the wetness of the brush and his breath smell. So he probably used to do the 10 second brush to both wet the brush and be able to demonstrate he had a minty breath smell.

yup .... just pair another brush to the app.

Each brush comes with 3 colour rings that clicks to the bottom that you can identify which brush is who's.

There is an oral b model with these features. Price will be different.

The Mi brush heads on all models look flimsy to me in comparison with oral b and phillips. I could be mistaken.

So the next test would be what does it take to fool it, e.g. if your kids rub it along their leg while playing Monster Hunter on their phones, will it register as them brushing their teeth? And if your kids aren't able to figure out how to defeat it by themselves, trade them in for better ones.

I'm a big fan of Xiaomi products. They make some pretty cool smart home products - it's not the cheap Chinese quality that tends to taint the Chinese product market either, it's pretty good quality gear.

I recently bought the Mi Roborock s50 robotic vacuum cleaner and it's just awesome.

It also won't be long before your kids will be asking to step up from a Xiaomi toothbrush to the Xiaomi scooter to get to school lol...

My guess is a built-in accelerometer/magnetometer device that detects motion and orientation. All available in a single IC that costs bugger all. Maybe also a force sensor on the head.

So if the toothbrush is more or less horizontal and moving backwards and forwards for a second with a bit of pressure applied, add 1 to the score.

Kids will be kids, but you should have as much help as possible.

If you periodically check them brushing and note the score. If the score varies a lot, then it gives you reason to show them it's not consistent and get them to show you how they brush.

Trade-in for used kids is terrible. The amount for a Fortnite addicted teen is actually measured in the red.

No kidding on the price (5x on RRP)

The brushes are very well made, but it's a sonic toothbrush so no rotating parts (like my Oral-b cross-action brush)

Yep. Even basic dumb electric brushes sense the motor load to determine whether you're pressing too hard, and adding an environmental sensor to a smarter brush is a pretty straightforward step.

I have a Philips Sonic toothbrush with Bluetooth. The App assumes you are the user and the only user. Unfortunately the App is useless as it doesn't connect reliably to the toothbrush. However after using the App a few times to work out how the brushing sequence works, I happily use the toothbrush twice daily for the best clean teeth feeling I've ever had, for a full year now.

I just checked and they got a kids model with Bluetooth, a bunch of stickers and a whimsical app.

There are also 2 head sizes available, which the smaller is for 3+ and the larger for 7+

Not bad for $99RRP.

But the heads are $30 for a pair. Thats over twice the price of the Mi's

This one would would be a good option for kids with their milk teeth/pre-teen.
