Hi all.

I have built a new house in the last year or so and neglected putting smart lights/switches in as I didn't think that there was many options available at the time. I have started playing around with Google home and integrating everything to work with voice as well as smart phone control. I feel like the lights are one of the biggest features in a smart home and are a necessary addition to routines to make them more seamless. So the time has come to do something about it but I am disappointed at the lack of results showing up for components available in New Zealand.

I am basically looking for switch module of some sort that is WiFi enabled or compatible with Google home, IFTTT, etc. I'm not talking about a light switch that physically mounts to your wall with WiFi built in, I'm talking about something similar to a Sonoff switch that you can wire in line (that I could hide in the ceiling or wall). I thought I was  really onto something with these but I am struggling to find evidence of certification here in New Zealand. This would allow me to use my existing down lights for only a few hundred dollars. I just absolutely cannot afford to risk my house going up in flames and the insurance not coming through because of non-compliant gear. If anyone can update me on certification for these it would be appreciated.

The other option I thought of was possibly replacing a lot of the down lights in the house with smart down lights but can't seem to find many available at a reasonable price, again that are compliant in NZ. I have seen the Zemismart down lights on YouTube and they look like they would do exactly what I want but not sure about the certification. I would rather not replace my existing lights as they are near new already. Replacing the down lights is also not really a proper solution to me as I have LED tube lights in the garage and outdoor lights that I would like to control as well.

If anyone can recommend some products out there that can achieve this please let me know.

Cheers!

From what I can see, I would need one of these modules for every switch I plan on making wireless, is this correct? They look decent but I'm definitely not going to be racing out to buy them at $100 a pop if that is the case...

It all comes down to how much DIY you are comfortable with and how much you care about the legality of it all.

My personal view of the zwave stuff is its over priced and annoying to set up. But it's the only real certified option for switching and dimming.

There is a company down Chirstchurch way called 'Futures New Zealand'. They are doing wifi smart switches (you will replace the entire wall plate). Fully certified, so a sparky will happily install for you. But switching only, no dimming. I think they are probably just Tuya based modules.

Edit: just to add, my approach has been Sonoff basics, flashed with Tasmota. No cerficitation so it's all at my own risk. But a year in I have absolutely no issues. My ongoing task for the last little while is finding a good dimming solution.

It appears from the above document they also have a dimming option.

I've hit them up for pricing as I'm interested - even if only switching at this point.

The switches from future systems are just rebaranded Lanbon which you can get for less than half the price from Aliexpress..

Aeotec Nano dimmers are expensive yes but also certified to be used in NZ and they work as advertised. ZWave solution IMO is better than WiFi solution for home automation simply because it offers better coverage and less noise due to not running on 2.4GHz range.

Do whatever you want to do man.
