When I try and play my CDs on my DVD/CD RW on my PC I hear a background continous dim background thumping as if you're in a car running over those bumps embedded in white lines on the side of the highway. I have updated sound drivers with no different. How do I fix this and will it appear on my ipod when I buy one (the plan)

The thing is the dvd drive can burn 4GB dvds of data which is usually the test the drive is working properly.

And it makes this dim thumping on many different CDs

Rip the Audio Tracks to the Hard Drive and play from there,
I suspect what you are hearing is the CD drive stepping or some other physical noise, As long as you dont hear the noise when you play the CD on a different CD player it will be fine when you put them on your ipod

Are you actually hearing it from your speakers, or the disc drive itself?

As above, if it plays in another player fine, and you hear it from the drive and not your speakers/headphones then you should be fine.

If you hear it from your speakers, use either itunes or WMP to rip the CD to your hard drive, and then play it back from the copy on your pc. Does it still happen?

If it is physically coming from your disc drive, then replace it asap!
