Lost my 3G connection to the whispernet.

Had to use ALT 311 to switch but only 3G that comes up is Telecom.

That didn't work, but the Vodafone 2G will give me a GPRS signal

Unless things have changed it presumably uses Vodafone like the previous model. The Kindles only support 850/2100 3G so you will only get 3G in Vodafone 2100 coverage areas. They don't support Vodafone's nationwide 3G which uses 900MHz.

It is using Vodafone, as this is what Amazon's roaming agreement is with.

The 611 page (from settings type ALT YQQ aka 611) tells me it is using P60WAT13 as the firmware.

A google search shows us http://www.att.com/media/en_US/docs/edo/ATT_Approved_Modules.xls where it lists 2G as being 850/900/1800/1900 and 3G as being 850/1900/2100.

Which would make sense with not picking up the 3G 900 freq.

GPRS works okay for whispernet, Browsing in 3G seems to be locked off anyway. Able to browse via wifi fine, off my home network.

Don't appear to be much free wifi out there in Wellington however.

The 311 page (from settings type ALT EQQ aka 311) was what Amazon Kindle support told me to do, but didn't come back with which network, ( Just try them in turn, until it works )

My wife and I are thinking of getting one of these, probably a Kindle 3.

A few queries:

- I see it uses Vodafone 2100MHz only; does this mean you can't take out the SIM and insert (for example) an XT one to use 850MHz? Or is it 2100 only, nothing else? Is the SIM soldered into place in the device or something?
- Can it be used on Prepay, or must it be on-account?
- Is there a slot for SD/micro SD?
- How long does the battery (typically) last?
- What's the best price and shop to get one from, or am I cheaper to buy it direct from Amazon and import it?

You can't remove the SIM or change networks. It's also not prepay or on account - it uses a AT&T SIM and global roaming.

It uses an AT&T SIM card and will roam on the network Amazon has agreements with. In our case it's Vodafone. It cannot be changed and there's no reason for change, since it's not a normal account.

When you buy a book the price of the data is built-in. You don't pay anything else - it's not "on account" and it's not "prepay".

The battery lasts up to a month, if you keep wireless off and only turn it on to download new items you bought. If you download free books (from Project Guthemberg for example) then you can copy the files via USB, or email to a special address that will forward to your Kindle next time its wireless is on (free forwarding is only via WiFi).

The best price is from Amazon. Anywhere else will charge extra, if you buy from Trade Me or eBay it will probably cost more.
