From the FAQ:

How much bandwidth does a Dropcam HD use?
We recommend an internet connection with at least 512Kbps of upload bandwidth to use a Dropcam HD. During average use, a Dropcam HD will use 200Kbps of upload bandwidth, which is about 2GB a day or 60GB per month.

I would prefer a local storage option, although cloud could work in conjunction with motion detection, this should reduce the bandwidth needs considerably I would have thought.

Just as an addition to this, I have a camera setup at home that I check through the PC etc, but also use IP Cam Viewer on my Android phone to enable viewing from anywhere. I probably use this more than when I am parked in from of a PC. There are no doubt other apps for other mobile OS as well but can highly recommend that app if you use an Android device.

I'm after a decent motion activated security camera. Ideally outdoor, wireless, images are as good as video. Upload to a website is better than requiring a PC. No need for IR or anything, I have security lights. All the ones on ebay are around 320 pixels wide, probably not for people to be recognisable.

If it's cheaper then something I could sit on a windowsill inside would be almost as good. A webcam connected to a Raspberry Pi perhaps? I already have a 720p webcam, and I can get a better one reasonably cheaply.

Reason: tagging on my shed I'd like to capture them if they come back in case the police can identify them, for general security use, and monitoring tradesmen.

How about a raspberry pi with the rasp pi camera module ?
Specs 5 M pixels 1080 video costs, 16 pounds. ( plus the pi of course )

Add picam software ( GitHub)
Add motion google drive uploader and emailer ( google).

I can't get the urls to add to this post so you would have to google it. Even if you have to buy a raspberry pi it would be less than the $170 Per camera a poster above is paying. It still interested spend 20 minutes googling the options. I think you can now buy versions with IR active (filter removed)

Alternatively I bought a Foscam 8910 as a baby monitor which as IR night vision built in and basic motion detection with emailing the picture if you want. I left it in a well lit room when I went to UK on holiday and caught nice photos of my friend turning some lights off. He had keys and the neighbours had contacted him saying too many lights had been left on. Not HD but easily identifiable as to who he was and would have caught great photos if he was a burglar trying to steal my PC..

He was a little freaked out to get a text from me 2 minutes later when the gmail email arrived on my phone in uk.

sbiddle: Whatever anybody does avoid the Swann gear at all costs. It's cheap nasty rubbish, and a bit like like comparing a $299 10.1" netbook with a Macbook Air.

No, its like compareing a Vtech babys first laptop to a decent computer, but only if the baby computer cost as much as the decent computer or more.

If you are seriously considering a swann camera, then cut out the middle men and go straight to china via ebay and get it for $15 not $150.

Thanks for the links to the software, that could work well. $150 including case and memory card from a site called raspberrypishop.co.nz plus a little messing around, leave it in the window, and I can hack away until it does what I want. I'll do a bit of googling to make sure it's not too difficult then go for that option I think, unless someone comes up with something easier :)

I've just installed Dorgem on my PC, that will do as a temporary solution until I get around to the R Pi stuff.

Is there a R Pi case that will hold the camera module as well?

I will check out those forums, thanks.

I saw on one site where someone had got a fake outdoor camera and put the pi and camera module in it on a flat plate of something.

That might be a good idea. I'd have to get power up there though, which would be a pita... though I have power up there I'd just have to run a huge extension cord.

One of my pi is in a Pibow rainbow case the other clear plastic.

Bought from here which isnt loading well for me ( http://shop.pimoroni.com/) alternatively https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi-cases.

The Pibow cases need a different top with a gap for the camera cable which is another 2 pounds

Camera options here also list the night verson which is the same camera except with the IR filter removed.

Hi Guys,

quite new to Geekzone, but saw this post thought I might be able to help.

I'm a bit biased towards Axis as I work for them, but you can't beat them as I have been using them since 2004 way before I started working for them.

your best option for a house camera would be M series like M3024-LVE for outdoor HD with IR.
indoor you could use the M3004-V or M3005-V. http://www.axis.com/products/m30_series/index.htm

insert an SanDisk Ultra HC SD card 16/32/64 gig and you can get up to 60 days recording on 60g depending on how much motion. I get around 64 days on 16g inside garage which has low motion.

then you could you use our free software called Axis Camera Companion to view the camera from your PC or Laptop or any mobile device with few different apps like axis camera companion or video assistant by BrightSentry.

but please do read the below if using NAS, I still recommend using SD cards

then most of you will say you can't buy Axis, yes we do have a partner based programs and distribution channels as we don't like to see our product being sold online but more importantly our product is targeted for professionals in the security and surveillance industry. not that most of you IT geeks here know less than them, most IT guys actually know more about our product than security co.

you can however buy our product from most security co, they don't have to install it as its not 230v hard wired, it's an IT device with PoE. and most security co are happy to give you a price on our product, if you find it hard to track someone let me know and I can recommend someone depending on where you live.

plus Axis invented the IP camera back in 1996 and we only make IP cameras so we know what it is required to have a good working camera that is reliable, good image with low bandwidth.

I've got the RPI A, camera and Motion setup and it works a treat. Streamings pretty crappy but overall it works well.
