BigHammer: You forgot Radio! Hardly cost effective, but a non-cellular way to transmit/receive information.

I'd go for the SMS option, maybe mobile data if data usage was small enough. As pointed out above, they're cheap enough to buy.

walkie talkies that can do data? thats a possibility, or make your own radio setup is another way.

or you could look at the harris range of radios and then start using the free HAM radio frequencies. (transmitting on an unauthorised freq is a fine of $10k not to mention the questions of why you have military grade radios)

What _actually_ are you trying to do.

Track your wife/child. ...
Spy on someone. ...
Track your car/truck...

I have ordered one of these... Not sure when it will ship or how good it will be, worth a play though.

Ehm if you are willing to run something on an Android device that is not connected to the internet you can make a logger yourself.

I have built my own GPS Tracker by using an Android app called "Tasker"
It checks for my GPS location every 10 minutes and then uses an HTTP GET mechanism to post the lat/long coordinates to my website where I save it in an SQL database.
Now this obviously requires connectivity.

However I've also set up tasker to dump the GPS lat/long with a time & date stamp in a local logfile on the SD card.

I can then read the logfile by hooking up the device through USB and process the data so technically the online feature is not a MUST but you CAN use it ;)

The new TK102 units have space for a micro SD and claim the ability to start and stop logging to it via sms, and also start an upload of the log files. I have never played with that since I just use the give it a missed call and get a sms back on the odd occasion I need to find the car in a large carpark.
