Thanks for all the ideas people. I'll sit down with the boss when I get a chance and go through various options with him.

I like these Foscam - http://foscam.com/. As mentioned you could detect motion and trigger an email to an email to text service - this would be a pretty reliable way to be alerted. These guys are really good if you want to go that route - https://www.bulletin.net/product-messenger.html

What's up with the link at the end of your post? It appears to be advertising some kind of messaging service not associated with your message.

Are you allowed to post a link to your website if I ask you to? Sounds easier than a bunch of people emailing you. If not please email it to me.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but can anyone recommend ip camera monitoring and recording software for Windows? I've got a nice little IP cam off Alibaba but the bundled software is not that great.

I use Blue Iris for my cams. Lots of Camera's supported out of the box, lots of options for event based actions (allowed me to tie back into my home automation software) and I needed software that could indepentantly stream the feeds so I wasn't stuck with rtsp that some of my cams used. So far has worked great for me and have felt it was worth the $'s. Trial is available.

I used the motion detection in built in the foscam to email pictures to my Gmail account worked very well.
Caught photos of my friend turning lights off. (8910)
Any security camera for me must save photos off site.

Primary use is as baby cam as has IR built in for night viewing
