Keeping my eye on this. I feel bad for recommending a pixma for my family and all I hear about is how much damn ink it chugs through

We brought a Brother DCP1510 Mono Laser Multifunction on Thrusday, It was cheap ($149 with $50 cashback) , comes with 700-1000 pages of toner. The replacement toner cartridges are $80 and do up to 1000 pages. The drum needs replacing every 10000 pages.

Its on special for $149 at Warehouse Stationery, comes with a $50 cashback, And also you get 3 years onsite warranty when you buy genuine brother toner and drums. Give it a look! Only downside is that it is USB only, no ethernet, no wifi Brother DCP1510 Mono Laser Multifunction on warehousestationery.co.nz

We've had inkjets in the past, And I think the problem was we didnt use it enough so the ink dried up, and the cartridges were really expensive. Laser just seems so much better as long as you are not printing photos

hairy1: We have an HP OfficeJetPro 8600 plus and it is the bees knees. Great internet integration (scan to email etc) and consumables claim to be cheaper than laser. The low cost brothers are terrible. You just need to look at their page yields to work out how they make money on a $60 printer.

If HP ink cartridges still have the print head built in, then HP would be the way to go for low usage inkjet printing.

Having sold brother MFCs in a previous job many years ago, I'd say stay well clear of their low end ones, nothing but trouble!

Someone mentioned poor print quality with a pixma.... I suspect a combination of incorrect settings or paper stock is to blame as I've owned about 4 pixmas over the last 10 years and poor print quality was never an issue, blocked print heads on the other hand..

Never owning a laser printer this one looks interesting

Hey Nick,

Sorry the stats don't mean much as we have only just finished starter cartridges. Black starter is still going. We have printed:

Total pages printed

973

Total black-and-white pages printed

227

Total color pages printed

746

Total single-sided pages printed

830

Total double-sided pages printed

107

Not sure how many pages we are supposed to get from the starter cartridges. We are still using an HP 1515n colour laser for our black printing mostly. This printer has a fuser issue and the colour has become misaligned from the black. This means it is no good for printing colour anymore (hence the swap to the inkjet)

Never owning a laser printer this one looks interesting

$200 for a laser printer seemed good. Until I saw the price of the toner.... $129 per cartridge, and you need one for each colour (yellow, cyan, magenta, black). No mention of how many pages per cartridge.

Actually, looking at PriceSpy, there are now quite a lot of cheap colour laser printers available... cheapest is $52.62

ChristineNZL: Our Canon Pixma needs new ink so I've decided it's time to get rid of it! We have had 2 Pixmas in the past and they have both died just a few months out of warranty and we've always just bought new ink for them so bought another Pixma just so we won't have wasted money on the ink. Anyway this time I've decided to forget new ink and just never buy a Pixma again.

We just want a cheap multi-function printer. We do not print photos. We really just want to print homework that the children have done and to scan and copy now and then. I did a quick Google and had decided on a Brother MFCJ470DW as Harvey Norman had it for $110 and Brother were doing a $30 cash back but we were a day too late for that so I decided to keep doing a bit more research which brings me here. Warehouse Stationery have good deals on Epson printers at the moment but I really don't know much about them or any other printers to be honest other than our bad experience with Canon Pixma - never again! Thanks.

Interesting thread to read through! Especially with how divergent peoples opinions/experiences are.

We've had a Canon Pixma iP4500 for about 6 or 7 years and it's been a brilliant printer, especially the quality of photo's. The 1st world problem for us is that it only has USB connectivity which hasn't been terribly reliable via our router and includes loss of a few management functions.

We've also had an HP C6380 for the same time period and I hate it - the only reason I've hung onto it is for the scanning function. I've threatened for a long time to record myself smashing it to pieces with a sledgehammer and posting it online. Now I'll be able to do this reasonably soon :-)

In the last few days we've purchased a Canon MG7160 to replace both current machines. It's all set up and ready to run and lots of scanning is lined up for it...

We never had any problem with the print quality of the Pixma. With 2 of them they just stopped feeding the paper through. Our current one rarely prints first time. It often says it is out of paper which it never is. We don't print a lot so maybe the ink heads drying up has caused some of these problems?

Mono-laser is not an option for us - colour is a must. I just have to decide how far we can stretch our budget. I may have to spend some money on a temporary solution (cheap inkjet) until we can afford a decent colour laser and I'm leaning towards an Epson XP200 mainly because at $59 it is half price at Warehouse Stationery and is still cheaper than getting new ink for our dodgy Pixma.
