linw: Just thinking, the only way of having an instant-on setup is to keep power on the unit and have it go into sleep mode when the car is parked. Wonder what the battery drain is when in sleep mode?

No its not. They could have a separate video decoder for the composite camera go straight to the lcd panel. The one I had the misfortune of using laid a whole lot of pointless lines over the image in software.

My analog lcd panel for a reversing camera was on and showing within half a second of getting a video signal. Don't think I could have started the car and get it into reverse any quicker than the screen powered up.

I appreciate that an analogue display could be fast enough but are you saying that some of these CE units can do instant-on?

Not sure about aftermarket but factory ones all do it. I would assume something from a real company would be better than obsolete tablet technology jammed into a din form factor.

The trademe unit looks like this one that I bought from dealextreme last year. I attached it to an existing reversing camera and doesn't take too long for the reversing view to come up even if the unit is off - maybe ten seconds at the most. As I've previously mentioned here, I was pretty impressed - it's a cheap win-ce based unit (the android ones were hundreds more) but does a good job - touchscreen, NZ radio frequencies supported, bluetooth phone integration, iPrimo GPS works well on it, plays videos etc. Obviously that one came with a Toyota loom, but I agree that the cheap chinese headunits are definitely worth a look.

Thanks for the input, tieke. Are you saying the boot time is 10 sec or does the camera display come up before the boot has finished?

My problem with suppliers from overseas is with the GPS software and NZ maps. At least from TM those are supplied. I do have IGO Primo s'ware from GPS units but my map is out of date. Not much, if any, saving, now, either.

I can time it tomorrow, but basically the rear view comes up pretty quickly once you start reversing even if the unit has been turned off. There is a slight boot time for the main unit section, so maybe it comes up before that? I will have a look. The initial boot time for the GPS section takes quite a while though.

Just to note that I eventually remembered to check the start-up time on the unit, and although the main interface takes about 10-11 seconds for initial start-up (ie show the radio/stereo options etc), the reversing cam is much quicker - it only takes 2-3 seconds to go live.

That's interesting. Obviously, at least with your unit, the delay issue has been thought about.

If I do go ahead with mine I have to spend around $100 on a fascia kit. Wish there was just a std square 2 x dIN slot!
