i ended up buying some pro micro's with the inbuilt usb chip and some ultrasonics. should be able to set up both sides of the garage for under $40 for the pair. just have to get some suitable LEDS to fit into some flushboxes

my pro micros turned up today...man they are TINY...not much bigger than a USB stick. will easily be able to put them inside the flush boxes and the same with the ultrasonic sensors....now just have to work out how to program it. :)

went to the elec supplier armed with my ultrasonic sensor to sort out flushboxes and plates.... Turns out that the ultrasonic sensor fits perfectly into the legrand faceplate!!! WIN!!! no drilling required, just a bit of hot glue or silicon on the back to mount it.
Its actually the same faceplates that we are using throughout the rest of the house so pretty pleased with that....
just need to sort the LED lenses as you cant buy empty lenses for these yet. i have a couple of old maglite copies taht i may tear apart and mount into a flushbox....
EDIT.. not sure why its only showing half the pic...heres the direct link..
