why can't engineers create heat transfer devices with one cable?

put it in your son's room, give me the heat here in Dunedin, i'll pay for it

Yeah what type of windows do you have in the room?

If they are the full height, hinged at the top type, then you'll be directing heat/air rising into the room. Deflecting this is definitely worth a look.

What is the house constructed of, and what colour is it? It wouldn't take much to get a current of warm air heading up the outside surface on a warm day.

yeah you are all right; we have the perfect storm.

The windows are hinged at the top, half height windows.
Exterior is cedar, stained, dark grey/charcoal.
We have found that if the sun is coming in hard and there is no wind around; then leaving the window closed with the blind up is better than opening the window.

We have roller blinds on the inside already, but they don't do much, as the black out blinds already have soaked up the heat. I think until the black out blinds can be removed (they are a necessity currently, and just normal blinds are not enough - his room is a sun trap!), we are going to be chasing our tail with the only real option being to get something to force cool air in (or suck it out as mentioned in an earlier post) to try and counter the heat soaked blinds.

Louvres on the outside, set to the correct angle works well. Lets light in, but not direct sunlight and also prevents the glasshouse effect you have at the moment.

Else use shade cloth (much cheaper), but it also blocks light.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Portable aircon units are a PITA because they still need to be vented outside and they are noisier.

But if you really want one, I wouldn't buy one brand new as they are way overpriced.

I have a portable unit and am thinking of selling it.

Yeah that is a downside, they do require you to cut a hole in glass for the exhaust. There is also the drip tray when they are in Heat Pump Mode.

What type of tints have you got on the windows? As you need a type that reflects infra-red light.
