Yep - IR doesn't sound like a good plan then - plus you get no monitoring either - i.e. if someone changes the temp using the remote, openHAB will have no idea. Much better to go with one that has a proper API.

for me I was going to go with Daikin but the panasonic unit was $2000 less and more efficient :)

I used EES, for a 8 duct system it came to around $9000ish (with the wifi module and a cut off to the living areas).
