The cube is pretty random on if it responds, and I have found it drops off from smart things quite often, whereas all the other sensors have been rock solid.

If the cube reported orientation and I could label the sides to choose a mode, that would be good, but its all just the tap/shake/flip 90/flip 180 degrees things and another I cant remember. Interesting novelty idea but shake the cube to toggle the lights isnt a great user interface idea.

@tieke - what sort of range do you get between the gateway and the sensors etc? Do they have to be pretty close?

I'm in a two-storey house with about a seventy square meter footprint and haven't had any problems yet with range - I assume it's standard zigbee range. I now have the hub plugged into a wall in the centre of the house, but it was previously in one corner about 11 metres from a door sensor which was picked up fine.

apparantly the zigbee versions of the power sockets act as repeaters as well. They cost more than the wifi versions.

I have a couple that I have on my smartthings hub since the wemos which it also supports are so damn large they block everything. If you do get them, be aware they have shutters on the AU socket which need an earth to open. So old double adapters are great to plug 2 pin AU plug things into them.

I had pretty much the same reaction - the only use-case I came up with was as a bedside remote which would be simple to use in the dark, but it was easier to reach for a standard switches rather than waving a cube around (or I could just ask Google to turn on the lights). The rest of the mi smart home series seems value for money, but the cube seems to just be a gimmick.

I have several of the xiaomi zigbee sockets, so if they do act as repeaters this might have helped my range.

Im thinking they might be why I am having so much problem with the wemo lamps now, before they were fine, now they disconnect and I have to do the turn them off and on 5 times to reset and then add thing in smart things to get them back again, only since I have added the sockets. range was fine thruout the house before adding them, floor area is about 60m2 x 2 and they worked in the detached garage fine too, but not in the shed.

Order arrived from AliExpress yesterday, so pretty happy with the 10 day delivery!

Have been playing around with a gateway, 2xtemp/humidity sensors and 1xwireless switch. Have to say I am very impressed, the size of the temp sensors is great - very discrete and I can see me chucking these every where (so long as range is ok - haven't tested this yet). The wireless switch seems to work quite well with the built-in gateway scenes - i.e. turn on gateway led etc.

I have put the gateway on my IOT VLAN which doesn't have any internet access normally. In order to get the Mi Home app to see it however I obviously needed to enable internet access. Everything is working fine at this point. Wireless switch events are logged in the app (via the Xiaomi servers) as are temp/humidity changes.

I then enabled *developer mode* in the app and have managed to get a python script running based on https://github.com/illxi/mihome. This successfully finds the gateway and lists the devices associated with it, including the current temp/humidity and battery voltage levels.

What isn't working is async updates from the devices. So I don't ever see any switch events arriving at my script, or temp/humidity reports. Nothing seems to be getting broadcast from the gateway when one of my devices sends a report/update/event. Just wondering if anyone has this sort of thing working locally?

I want to build a very simple script that listens for events from the gateway and publishes to an MQTT topic, where openHAB and anything else that is listening, can consume them.

Ok - got things working. Was a VLAN issue with the UDP broadcasting. Once I put the script on a VM in the same VLAN as the gateway everything sprang into life. This is awesome! Thanks for the pointer @richms and @tieke. If the battery life on these is anywhere half decent they will have my vote as the go-to for temp sensors, possibly motion (haven't got one of them yet) and wireless scene activations.

I have knocked up a little mihome2mqtt python script which just publishes sensor readings at the moment (i.e. read-only) if anyone is interested. It is based on the scripts readily available out there so nothing new. I intend to develop this further to make it read/write so I can control the gateway LED and any sockets/switches I might add later.

Anyone know how often the gateway publishes battery voltage readings for each sensor? I can see them when the script first starts up and requests the device list. But I am yet to see a battery report since. Perhaps it will need to be a periodic poll initiated by openHAB?

All in all, very impressed with these!

I just have my gateway and a button set up as a doorbell, and a magnetic door sensor on the parcel box to turn its light on so I know if someones been in that hopefully leaving things for me.

The sensors are all on my smartthings hub and in the fridge/freezer and a couple of other places. Sensors have been totally fine on smartthings which is more than I can say for my wemo lamps.

Yes, there are community written device handlers to get them working, the first version didnt handle negative temperatures properly but the later one works great.
