I have thought of doing an arduino heat pump project for sometime and it looks like I'm not the only one who want's more control of their heat pumps.
It would be easy to do if you can sample the remotes instruction codes. They you could set unlimited start and stop times. It could be controlled by your phone's bluetooth.

Using a Pi would be a bit overkill for the job.

I've use a pi and lirc (with a USB IR blaster) and some nodeJs code to expose lirc to a web client (so you can http://server/remotes/yamaha/key_poweron) - works well in openhab.

But I was doing other things with that pi, so for just that task it would be overkill.

I'm in much the same situation - wanting to smarten up a dumb heat pump and a raspberry pi sitting around. Some months ago, I found out about Home Assistant, and it looks to be along the lines of what I'm after - but I just haven't gone any further into it... yet.

Ha, scratch that then! I've just ordered a Broadlink RM Mini from AliExpress (US$13). Thanks for the heads up.

I don't think I've ever seen a product with as good reviews on banggood:

https://www.banggood.com/Broadlink-Black-Bean-Smart-Home-Wifi-Remote-IR-Controller-Universal-Appliances-Smart-Control-p-1049494.html

Has anyone got one of these?  Can you poke http commands at it and control IR devices?

Also does it have RC5 and RC6 for tellys, av equipment etc?  I've got a built one out of a rasbperry pi that works well for my stereo, but adding something like this for my tv would be great.

Yes, using Home Assistant to do this.

In broad terms, how easy or difficult was it to configure Home Assistant?

I've got the broadlink mini too. It makes it so easy to come home to a warm house :D

I also have one of their wifi 240v plugs (like a wemo) and have it set to turn lamps on and off.

Now I know that Home Assistant works, I'm going to be in a world of trouble with the mrs and chinese shipping :D

Get a BroadLink IR controller, it has an app. It's easy and works well for my two older heat pumps - I had to get two units as they're in different rooms.

How versatile are these across different heat pumps? Some of them (like mine) don't have simple "On"/"Off"/"Temp up 1" style commands but send multi-hundred-bit command words that reprogram the entire heat pump every time you press a button on the remote. I ended up getting an IndieGoGo'd one that was known to work because at the time I checked it wasn't clear whether any generic IR-remote device would be able to deal with it.

The big broadlink in their app seems fine with that. Cant recall on my orico how it was. The little plug ones also worked with my fujitsu once I found it under a different name because they sell as something else in china.

Its my cheap portable one that they have issues with since it does just have a up down remote and a button that cycles thru heat/cool/dry/fan so you have no idea what it is set to.

I found a wifi remote on aliexpress that I bought and then put in a box while cleaning up before testing it out, but I was hoping that would let me see what it is set to and have the changes on the remote also update the app on the phone, since with using the normal remote it gets out of sync with what the apps say it is set to. Would really need to have something also recieving IR and updateing an internal state to match what the AC is set to inorder to keep using the standard remote and I dont know of any devices that do that.

I know they recognise Panasonic, and all controls are able to be used except the timer (which would defeat the purpose anyway... If you want to use the timer, use the timer on the remote).

There is a timer option in the app for the broadlink. I use it so I can set the Panasonic heat pump on during weekdays only. Works brilliantly.
