I've got the Misfit Vapor ordered. Ordered it purely on looks, as I think it's currently the best looking smart watch since the original Huawei Watch.

... a nice looking watch, but not exactly small! https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/528843-misfit-vapor.jpg?thumb=y&width=333&height=245

Yeah, it's a little bit bigger than desired. But atleast not like the Samsung Gear S big. LOL

I use my apple watch without it being connected to the iphone most of the time. So as long as they are keeping the iphone 6s for the occiaional sync, it can still offer a lot of features. For example I can still call via facetime from the watch without the phone, as well as use the fitness apps and weather etc. But I guess it depends what features you actually want, as some apps need the phone to be connected.

Interesting. She has an iPad, which won't be going away anytime soon. Would that be a viable sync target instead?

I guess we'd be losing things like notification support, and Apple Pay, right?

It unfortunately only works with an iphone, and it needs the iphone to update the watch OS and makes some changes to settings, as well as uploading new apps. But an iphone 6s should get ios support for another 2 years, especially as apple still sell it as a current model.

I've been looking at the S2 pro and the S3.

The S3 is very big, it looks big on me (185cm, >100kg).

I bought a Gear S3 about 6 weeks ago.  I really like it, but as others have said it is quite chunky.  While I felt comfortable wearing my previous "smartwatch" (Garmin Vivosmart HR) when sleeping, the Gear S3 feels too bulky to comfortably wear in bed so I don't use it for sleep tracking.  It is quite good at fitness tracking though.  It will automatically detect when you start working out, and can even hazard a guess at the type of activity (though when I'm pushing my daughter in her pram it interprets this as cycling, presumably because my hands are held in the horizontal position).  It also has the ability to auto-pause your activity, for instance when you're out walking and waiting at the traffic lights.

It's got a great display, the control method (the rotating bezel) is fantastic, and battery life is good.  Contactless payment isn't available here (because we don't have Samsung Pay), but that isn't really a deal breaker for me.  It uses a standard strap connector so you don't have to use proprietary bands, which is useful.  The apps are somewhat limited - I'm sure the Apple Watch apps are more abundant - but I've managed to get some good ones for the things I use (e.g. an app for controlling Philips Hue lights).  Notifications are usually pretty good, though not perfect.

I did use the Gear S3 for a couple of days on my old iPhone before pairing it to my new Samsung, and it wasn't completely useless.  Obviously the functions are limited (can't reply to messages, can't control music apps other than the default Apple Music app), but it did receive messages and notifications, and obviously works as a fitness tracker.

If you aren't wedded to the idea of a traditional looking watch, then maybe take a look at something like the Garmin Vivosmart HR.  I really liked mine.  Like a Fitbit it was relatively small and discreet, lasted 4-5 days before charging, did fitness and sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, notifications (though can't reply to messages) and music control (just the default app).  Again, it would work better on Android than iPhone, but I used it for over a year on my iPhone 6 without too many issues.  Also, it was waterproof, which was great for going swimming.

Thanks for the recommendations all, but it sounds like my decision got a wee bit easier. My wife has decided that perhaps dipping her toes into the Android waters isn't for her after all.

This was partly prompted by the poor curation of the Google Play store, after reading an article about a crap tonne of fake WhatsApp apps, all largely indistinguishable from the real thing, and many of these being malware.

She is also worried about changing to a new OS. She's your typical non-technical user, and may be having PTSD flashbacks to the time she couldn't figure out how to answer calls on my HTC One X (and my ensuing frustration with her, as I couldn't figure out how she couldn't figure it out :-)).

So as it turns out, an Apple Watch should fit the bill nicely.

Yep, Apple Watch was definitely the right choice. :-)

My daughter's going to Germany for two months, and the week before she's set to go, her phone starts playing up (failing to boot sometimes, camera crashing etc). Long story short, we upgraded my wife to the latest iPhone (not the X; that's crazy money), and my daughter inherits her 6S to use on the trip.

Opps a bit late to the party, but one thing to consider is the Samsung Gear S3, Gear Sport and Gear Fit 2 Pro have offline Spotify (Premium only) that enables you to save playlists to the device, meaning you no longer need to take your phone with you if you like listening to music while running. This is what is currently keeping me from upgrading to the Ionic. I'm waiting to see if Fitbit get this sorted. If they do, I'll get the Ionic as I do like the fitness tracking abilities of Fitbits in general.
