From memory when repurposing the adapters from drives I had schucked they are 2.1/5.5mm plugs, a 2.5 will be loose and give a bad connection to the drive. Will grab some of my cheap CCTV plugs later and try in a drive and double check.

Sounds like I'd better take a drive and power block in to Jaycar tomorrow. It's easy to measure the OD of the plug, but I think I'd need to measure the socket in the drive to get a reliable result, and that assumes I can get the calipers deep enough to reach the centre pin. I wonder if I can find a spec online — I'll go have a hunt round.
