Ganny Herald hasn't been Granny Herald for at least 15 years now, she's Mutton-dressed-as-lamb Herald. Except for the weekend one, which is Selfie Herald.

Why not having a drone liability insurance, drone number plate registry and drone pilot licence for drones more than 2kg as mandatory? To get the licence, the future drone pilot needs to demonstrate that he's capable to follow safety rules and other's rights (not to fly over other's private property without prior permission, to stay away from airfield within control zone, gatherings, scenes of accidents, etc.).

[...] to stay away from airfield within control zone, gatherings, scenes of accidents, etc [...]

That would pretty much rule out any use of drones by reporters for newsgathering, such as filming the Turkish demonstrations which was done last year. Given that you can film gatherings and accidents with a video camera or cellphone now: from the ground, from a balcony or from a piloted helicopter, what's so special about using a drone?

Nope, the rules could apply in general, exceptions for professional use could be granted beside that. For instance, we fly drones ON the airfield to inspect a real big aircraft from outside.

The special of a drone is the guy who is piloting it with an unspecified level of awareness. You might know the consequences, but what's with your neighbour coming straight from the toy shop?

Man this makes me angry, no proof whatsoever but he's shooting his mouth off for his 15 minutes of fame.

I agree, I think he even said will never find out. Man, the plane is there in one piece, if it was a drone they will see the evidence as well as the drone parts. Obvious. It allegedly smashed his windscreen

Aviation industry is fickle when it comes to unknown safety elements. Always has been. It's like liability for the many has to always target the few.

Mythbusters - try to do experiments to support all the safety concerns and noone will support or insure them 'just incase'. Including use of mobile phones and how dangerous jetblast is

Much like the cellphones on forecourts, preventing transport of Lithiums.

Drones are evolutionary the next in line obviously, they already caused .5mW+ laser pointers be classes as prohibited importation for customs and 'offensive weapons' for the police due to muppets not causing any issues, but the potential to with all the strikes that were occurring.

And I don't think its the 2KG+ drone users that are the issue. Those with real cameras slung underneath and lots of carbon care about their units, and tend to not risk them to dangers and register flights when commercially linked

It's the rookie social media fliers that seem to be the party poopers - 4 cases of flying around fire scenes so far..

When watching those programs, it is almost as thought they are trying to find whether there is any possibility whatsoever, if it could have been human error with the pilots. In some cases it seem to still only comes down to a high probability, rather than actual 100% proof.

It always has to be pilot error, because if it's not then it's either airline error (the airline is liable) or aircraft manufacturer error (the manufacturer is liable). Ergo, it's always pilot error.

Don't they have lots of cameras positioned around the fuselage of a plane, so that pilots can see if there are any issues. They would surely be recording this, like you do with a cheap $100 dash cam. So why haven't they released any footage, or why hasn't there been any mobile phone videos? It is very unusual that in this day of everyone having a video camera, that there is no actual footage showing any drone.

A smallish drone was spying on us at home about six weeks ago.  It was hovering above our second floor balcony with camera oriented into our kitchen area, where I was peeling potatoes.  This part of the house isn't visible from outside our property.

I threw a potato at it but I missed and it buzzed away.   The spud was un-damaged

Maybe they should all fly with drones around them, so they can film the drones that aren't supposed to be there.

Yet in Wanaka last weekend when you would suspect there would have been a lot but nope everyone was behaved.

CAA and a number of agencies are starting to ramp up public education and trying to help get awareness up on drone use.

No they don't have cameras positioned around the fuselage, thus there is nothing recorded and nothing to release.

Who exactly is going to be taking these mobile phone videos? Considering the only windows where any worthwhile video could be taken is through the cockpit windows. Even then I'd doubt any camera phone footage would show anything worthwhile.

Yeah its becoming regular. It will be news clips, clickbait, but one day there will be a crash.

Im not up to speed here, but from what I have read annecdotally, the Police get called, no its not us call CAA. IMHO we need a few days of paid ads saying this is not on. Instant $5000 fine, it will be shot down, etc. May seem aggressive, but unlike a car, an aircraft flies in 3D, and it cannot stop.

Justin, your thoughts? Surely one day it will cause a more than near miss?
