Most likely because a male robot is more likely to be deemed sexist.

Good point. With all the hype over inequality, a male robot adds to that. So they make female robots, and there is drama? No Win

There was some research back in the 1990s suggesting that a female voice commands more attention.  Hence many early GPS voices etc were female.

If I recall correctly, some of the research also found that the female voice was able to be heard easier in general because of pitch/tone/timbre than a deeper male voice, this I guess directly relates to commanding attention. although most companies offer voice options now as well.

There is some interesting work going into facial expression and how to replicate this on robots.

It goes back before the 1990s, it was originally done for fighter pilots, who were exclusively male at the time and who responded better to female voices when under stress. More recent work, and in particular at a time when there were female pilots as well, indicated that there's little difference between the two, or at least it varies based on the situation and there's no clear winner.

GPS voices need to be female though so you can call your GPS Pamela (Anderson): Made of plastic, and not very smart.

There is currently an image of a 'female' robot illustrating an article on RNZ about AI. This started me thinking and it occurred to me that the overwhelming majority (though not all) of humanoid robots are made to look like young, attractive females. I even happened to see part of a documentary the other day on a company that is manufacturing AI sexbots capable of conducting conversations with their owners.

I can understand sexbots to some extent as they are being produced for a specific purpose, but why are supposedly 'serious' robots also made in the image of young females? Why are the voices of Siri and Alexa young females? Why do all the chatbot assistants have female names?

Is there some kind of new male chauvinism driving this? Women now have to be respected and paid equally, but robots can be made to replace 1950s male ego massaging secretaries. What does this tell us about current real attitudes? Has anything actually changed?

I think it's fairly straight-forward.

Most people - male and female - find the voice and appearance of a young adult female pleasant. Perhaps through societal conditioning or maybe evolution.....but it is what it is.

Possibly females evolved to have voices that command attention.  When young, by sounding attractive.  When older, by being shrill.

All the lift (elevator) voices and automated call centre phone voices tend to be female too.
