Well therein lies the ambiguity...

Group L vehicles are pretty much motorbikes, mopeds etc

Group M vehicles are pretty much cars, vans, utes, etc

10.3(3)     A motor vehicle of Group L may be fitted with one or two daytime running lamps to the front of the vehicle.

Would imply motorbikes

10.3(4)     A motor vehicle of Group M or Group N may be fitted with one pair of daytime running lamps to the front of the vehicle

Would imply cars

But then the prior link on the NZTA site specifically (perhaps generically) states:

  • You can fit up to two daytime running lamps to your vehicle. If your vehicle already has two daytime running lamps as original equipment, you can’t fit a second pair. On some vehicles, daytime running lamps operate as a function of the main beam headlamp.

I'm going with 2 x DRLs, and having them power off when headlights are on.  WOF not til end of next year, I'll deal with it then.

Already bought the relay which I'll run prior to the 2nd LED driver, from what I can see it will be:

Relays pins:

85 = GND (BLACK wire)

30 = +'ve from ignition (YELLOW wire in my case)

87a = +'ve to DRL (LED driver RED wire in my case)

86 = +'ve from headlight switch (BLUE wire)

87 = +'ve from headlight (RED wire)

Yet to test...

EDIT: Oops, blue wire, not green :-)

k1w1k1d:

Wiring for new three wire module to meet NZ rules;

Black = ground

Red = ignition

White = headlights.

Operation: The LED's will operate as bright DRL's with just the ignition on. Rather than going off when the headlights are on they will remain on dimly and become an extra set of front position/side lights.

You are only permitted one pair of DRL's, so will have to remove the other set.

As well as DRL being limited to 1 pair you can only have 1 pair of position lights. On heavy vehicles the xmas lights are end outline markers.

Managed to get out at lunchtime and do a quick test with the micro relay.  Worked sweet, lights go on and off with ignition and headlights respectively.

Let me know if this sounds right, from relay:

30 = Vcc+ (from ignition, with fuse)

85 = GND

87a = to RED wire on LED driver (output contact, normally closed)

86 = from BLUE wire (headlight +'ve wire)

Then from 3 x wire LED box perspective:

BLACK = GND (common with 85 above)

RED = from relay 87a (output contact, normally closed)

WHITE = unused (although could swap with RED wire if I wanted the LEDs dimmer)

Ok that’s odd...

I wired them up as per my test, with engine off but ignition on, the LEDs light up, turn headlights on the LEDs turn off.

However if I do the same with the engine running, the original LEDs (and only original) flicker.

Ideas??? I know voltage increases with engine on (12V to ~14V) but what would cause this?

I've read a load resistor may help, would it work under these circumstances?

Easy solution - was to wire both LED boxes after the relay.

Problem sorted!
