alasta: My Sennheiser PXC-250s and Panasonic RP-HC700s, on the other hand, both operate fine without batteries and both are sonically excellent despite being much cheaper than the Bose alternative.

The PXC-250 is what I have. Very nice sound, they are based on the PX-200 which are the closed version of arguably one of the best portable headphones around, the PX-100. Thats why the PXC-250s have such a good sound.

Yep, I had a set of PX200s that I bought in 2005 and used for a few years hence why the PXC250 was naturally the fitting option when I had a bit of spare cash and decided that I needed noise cancellation. I have to admit that when I first got the PX200s I thought that the build quality was a bit flimsy, particularly the little earcup balljoint, but both my PX200s and PXC250s have stood the test of time with frequent usage.

Apparently the newer model, the PXC-250-II is sonically a bit better but ultimately I'm happy with what I've got. My only gripe is the large in-line noise cancellation module which I find annoying compared with the integrated noise cancelling circuitry on the QC15 and HC700.

As I've already noted anyone seriously considering the QC15 would be mad not to consider the HC700 as an alternative. Although the noise cancelling isn't quite as effective they're little more than half the price and they really are surprisingly good.

I have tried pretty much all of them and I can categorically tell you Bose and Sennheiser aren't even in the same league as Blackbox. Save yourself some cash, get you a pair of Blackboxes and you'll never look back.

I have had the Sennheiser pcx 250 for a few years now and they are genuinely good for air travel, I find that on even the quietest setting the plane audio has is loud in my ears with these but one complaint is that I end up with sore ears after a few hours using them so swap over to sennheiser buds instead, also sleep with the buds in a lot of the time. Think if I was to replace them I would go for a full over ear can style.

Any oher users find that the 250 (or other noise cancelling headphones) give you sore ears or is it just me?

I haven't noticed it with mine personally.

+1 for Blackbox.

I used lots of reference gear (dad's in broadcast biz) throughout the years, and Blackbox really has a winner with their C14/M14 range. Definitely take it for a spin.
