Anything I should do to check? I'm picking mine up today

When I checked my phone this morning NZ English wasn’t available as an option in Google Assistant. Until it is you will need to set it to Australian (or US or UK) English to get it to work.

Yes, do your phone first. Get it set up, then in the Google Home app set up your speaker. Relatively painless as long as you don’t mind having your ears assailed by an Aussie accent.

Edit: And now that it should be officially supported in NZ, make sure you raise a ticket with Google help.

Stupid question, but what is the difference between Google Nest and Google Home Mini?

I have 3 Google Home Mini's already, and 1 of the large Google Home speakers.

Yeah my phone has been setup forever - use it with Home Assistant already for a bunch of stuff but never had a "real" assistant device. I just found it funny having picked up the officially supported device at JB Hifi this morning it says nope not supported buddy haha. It's the 2 for 1 that swayed me because I had always wanted to try one then get another later if it worked out.

Edit: the Nest Mini is effectively Home Mini 2, better speaker supposedly and just a general hardware update in terms of better wifi / BT (at least I've read its gone from somewhat crap to acceptable)

Google changed the name of all their smart devices to 'Nest'; so the 'Google Home Mini' is the original, while the 'Nest Mini' is the new version. Differences between models here: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home/google-nest-mini-vs-google-home-mini/

While certainly some improvements I doubt it's worth upgrading existing devices, but if I do buy new ones I'd select the Nest model over the original.

(Nomenclature gets murkier with the Hub range - the original Google Hub has been renamed the Nest Hub, but I don't think the product change in any way; the Nest Max was released post this re-branding, but that in particular made sense as it has a camera that can function as a 'Nest' camera.)

Interesting that 1-day had Nest Hub Max units for an amazing price of $220 today (https://www.1-day.co.nz/products/google-nest-hub-charcoal) - not surprised to see they've sold out. I paid $350 only a couple of months ago, so a bit annoyed!

Seems like Google are marketing aggressively with the bogof offer in most shops. Warehouse, PB tech, JB hi-fi and Noel leeming are all offering it.

Well done getting a free one, we've been paying for a play music / youtube red now youtube music / premium family plan since July 2016 and never had a perk pop up there or in the google one benefits area either.

I was annoyed when I missed that by a few minutes, but less annoyed when I found out that they sent an apology to purchasers because it was actually the standard nest hub rather than the hub max. 1-day then said buyers could continue with their $220 purchase, which is a bit excessive as I think that's greater than the standard hub RRP.

Yeah not eligible, but meet all the terms and conditions listed which do not mention any regions, this is the way of google.

Enjoying getting the nest mini to tell me the temperature and heater state in various rooms to no particular benefit other than I can, and have set up a couple of speaker groups and even had it answer a couple of useful questions without needing to go get my phone.
