Cloud no, but FTP. If there is a PC onsite, you can FTP to the PC and sync that online if need be.

It can also email based on alarms, with a screenshot attachment.

I have my system to record only on motion as with the exclusion zones (so I dont monitor the road or the neighbors, etc.), nothing changes 90% of the time, so I would just be wasting disk space. With just recording motion I can fit 14 days on a 250GB SSD (which also makes playback and scrubbing through time much faster).

However each system is different so YMMV re disk space.

+1 to using NX Witness as VMS platform. It is fantastic. Not cheap but you get lifetime free upgrades and you get what you pay for. You can buy DW Spectrum licenses online which is re-badged NX Witness but cheaper licensing with same lifetime updates and software.

In regards to the cameras. As mentioned above it will come down to individual area requirements that you want to monitor. A safe and very good bet first of all nowdays is to get varifocal lens cameras so you can zoom in or zoom out of a specific location you want to record as you see fit. Dahua is my pick between it and Hikvision. You can get Dahua's for a lot cheaper compared to buying here in NZ with English firmware from reputable aliexpress stores so you can safely firmware update them if need be. Below is a very reputable store for purchasing IP cameras.

If you want varifocal the T3241 is really good. If you want a fixed lens option then T5442 is really good.

I ran 7 external network cable runs on my build. 6 for IP cameras to cover front, sides and back and 1 for Axis door station unit at front entry door.

Dahua's are the way to go from a POE perspective. Solid cameras that work well but it comes down to features you require.
Comments in-line below -

Record at least weeks worth of footage. - Dahua's record to SD cards or NVM. The SD card support is limited ~ 128gb depending on the model and that wont capture a weeks of footage so you will need to look at an NVM.

Record on motion with the ability to create exclusion zones (so car driving past doesn't set it off). - Dahua's support this OOTB. A car driving past could set it off. Depends on your angle but also if you use standard motion or IVM. IVM is built into their firmware and does smart detection. Its pretty good but still get false positives.

Record several seconds before motion starts and after motion ends - Dahua's support this OOTB.

Text or email notifications possibly a good idea - Dahua's support email notification if you configure up an SMTP server etc. Txt messages are not supported but push notifications can be setup using their app (extra cost)

Cloud or offsite backup of most recent footage (for if someone breaks in and actually steals the DVR/NVR as part of a robbery). - Not possible on most of the Dahua's unless you use their IMOU home range which supports this for detections only. I have this setup running at my parents place with SD's rolling, detections to cloud, access via app. Cloud backup is extra cost. I'm also using PIR detectors on these Dahua's to limit false positives.
EDIT: I see some cameras can also have SD cards for if the DVR is unavailable. Is this generally a rolling recording so even if the DVR was stolen, the camera might still have the last hour or so of footage (from before the DVR was taken offline)? This might eliminate the need for offsite backups?

I think I’ll definitely go Dahua for the cameras. Just a matter of picking which ones.

@billgates since I’m only looking at 4 cameras I can get a 4 channel NX Witness starter license for $420 +GST which didn’t sound too bad. After much research and testing I recommended this to replace our previous system at work, and it is so much better it’s ridiculous.

Certainly a more expensive way to go than an off the shelf NVR, but having used the software it really is excellent. And because the licenses are per channel you can install another instance off-site and mirror the footage if needed.

Picking the cameras for work was easy as we had very specific requirements, but I’m finding picking the ones for home much harder.
