This is a common problem "but dad I need my tablet in my room to listen to music".  An easy soluton is a google home mini.  They just tell it to play whatever music they want to listen to.

Interestingly enough I do have a couple of Amazon Echo Dot with Clock and my daughter does not want those "listening" in her room.

I just got a JBL mini thing...has wifi, airplay, chromecast and bluetooth......I do like that it has a mic cut off switch that it remembers on restart.  So I leave it in that state.  If I want ot talk to something, I have activate siri with the home button on my phone.

freitasm: After reading all the replies I would just go back to my suggestion. Rip or buy tracks online, copy to the mp3 player I linked, done.

Yeah I agree with this. I have an old basic MP3 player that I connect to my PC when I want to load anything on to it. Some software on my PC lets me subscribe to podcasts that I like listening to and it will download the podcasts in MP3 format. I also use get_iplayer for downloading BBC radio programmes. For music I just find it on Youtube and use one of the hundreds of Youtube-to-MP3 websites to convert it to MP3. No subscriptions to anything.

Thanks everyone. Just closing the loop on this one. Will go with a small Sony series B walkman and manage the music manually. Seems to be the best compromise of requirements.
