So how would you go about buying headphones for yourself?

I'd use google or their froogle service if it's still available, and find somewhere that ships internationally for reasonable prices. Honestly though with your budget there's not much point, just buy something locally.

You're not going to get anything decent in NZ for that price, so you might as well get these

If you want more suggestions from me you'll have to up your budget by quite a bit, i'm focused on the high end and most of them have to be imported. Otherwise i'll leave others to make recommendations for you.

I think I'm more keeen on headphones, no apparent reason why

But arent eH250, HD215 and the like considered quite decent?
Not everyone's rich or hve the cash to pay for such high-end gear like you and I'm sure theres a lot out there that's good and fits within $200 :(

I haven't really tried any low end headphones, but if you look at what's available in NZ and then look up reviews on my site you should find something. Just remember the site's aimed at audiophiles, so low scores are expected for cheaper headphones. Just make sure the ratings are similar to others in the same price bracket. Sennheisers are probably pretty good value and decent performers.

I don't think i've really added anything useful to the thread despite all my posts, sorry.
