The first question I'd ask is - how often does your wife read books? Then ask yourself where she likes to read them.

I weighed the pros and cons of getting a tablet vs an ebook reader and, for me, the Kindle was absolutely the best choice. I read every day. I like to read in bed for awhile before going to sleep. I also read in the bath.

Tablets are heavy, tricky to find a waterproof case for, and hard to hold and operate with one hand. I'd been reading ebooks on a PDA for years and the backlighting gets hard on the eyes after awhile, making reading marathons of an engrossing book really uncomfortable.

The Kindle, on the other hand, is lighter than the average novel, can be operated with one hand (making it easier to lie in bed on my side & read), is light enough to hold in one hand with a coffee in the other, and can be read outdoors in the sun or indoors in the bath.

I've avoided one-purpose gadgets for years. In a house full of PC's, laptops, netbooks, phones etc etc I figured the very last thing I needed was a single-purpose gadget. The only thing I regret about buying my Kindle is that I didn't get one sooner! 10 days after I got the first one, we ordered another one for the household.

If your wife only reads occasionally and doesn't read in bed or the bath, and is happy to read with her device on a table or balanced on her lap, then a tablet may be worth considering. Otherwise, the Kindle really is the way to go.

@ Elpie: Thanks, everything you have said makes sense and I was already coming to the Kindle as the solution but you have clinched it. She reads much of the time - including in bed at night.

The Kindle sounds great - I have have not read anything material against it. Hope Santa doesn't drop it while he's coming down the chimney.

If you do get it, consider also getting the lighted cover. It's here. I just love mine. It runs off the Kindle battery & draws very little power but enables you to read a book in dim light or complete darkness. The light is bright but is angled in such a way that a person can read in bed without disturbing the person next to them.

There are other lights you can get and, although the price for the lighted cover is sickening, I believe this is the best option - especially for people who love to read.

In the OP I was asking about dedicated e-book readers versus using a tablet as an e-book reader and also being able to also use it for other things.

This new B&N Nook Colour (Color?) looks like it might be an answer

- but I have already ordered the Kindle 3 for my wife and it's in transit. You can never keep up with tech.

Well, the new nook is only LCD, not e-ink. SO it'll come with all the disadvantages of LCD for reading.

Yep - understood that - very happy with the Kindle decision even I haven't seen it yet.

A story about e-ink screens v. LCDs in e-book readers:

I have just bought my wife a Kindle and am amazed art how small it is.  It is ideal for a person who is into a lot of reading and has small hands.

Having also had use of an iPad I can say that it is huge in comparison and cannot be held upright (say for reading in bed) for any length of time.  The kindle is more spcialised and therefore much better for its intended purpose.

The kindle only took 3 days to arrive from the US!

HAHA only 3 days to arrive... it'd better considering that we paid 40nzd for shipping lol...

anyway, yea i totally agree i wasnt sold on ebook readers but it definitely has better ergonomics compared to say ipad. lighter, longer battery, less eyestrain etc etc.

i think the trade off you get by getting an ebook reader is worth it compared to a multimedia device like the ipad. i find myself my kindle with me everywhere. very conveniennt :)

btw i am not bagging on the ipad, its just that the ipad is the only other real lcd competitor to the e-ink readers... apart from maybe the new nook? O.o
