Well after further discussion on another forum, I purchased a Squeezebox Duet.  5 mins to set up (basically input my SSID & WPA-PSK) and I was playing music from my NAS without a computer or TV on.  It turned out that the Readynas had Squeezecentre pre-loaded which made things very easy; although I did have to upgrade to the latest version to get the internet radio to work.  Now I've just got to figure out how to get playlists working effectively and I'm done!  Thanks for all you help. Cheers, D

And another update...

After getting one Squeezebox, I very quickly decided that I needed other receivers in the other rooms in the house so that I could take advantage of networked music everywhere (and get rid of those CDs that litter the other rooms).  You can (allegedly - I say this 'cos I haven't set it up yet) play different music on each receiver indepenently, or synch them all up to play the same song.    Given that the controller is now available as a free download to an iPhone/iPod or Android phone, there's no need to have more than one ; so I only wanted the receivers.  I was incredibly frustrated to be told by logitech support that you can't just buy the receivers themselves, but need to by the full Duet unit; and I couldn't find them online anywhere else

Anyway, after seeing a tradme auction yesterday, I had a quick surf today, and found that the UK logitech site is now selling receivers on their own at GBP109.  That led me to amazon.co.uk, where I found them for GBP91.73.  When your delivery address is NZ they automatically take off the VAT, so GBP76.44.  add the  shipping, convert to NZD and 2 new receivers will be costing me NZD379, which means that I can hook up to the kitchen stereo and the unit downstairs.

Then all my CD's are history!!! (or at least will be boxed up and put in the loft)

You probably could have also gone down the XBMC on Apple TV route, @$170 a pop you are probably looking at around the same ballpark price,

But,  great to hear everything worked out with your setup.
