He used the tape cassette adapter thingie (which I'm not that keen on, but I will use if I have to).

We used one of those back in the day to hook a portable CD player into our tape-only head unit, but the audio quality was rubbish. Far better to use the RCA inputs if possible, or failing that, get an FM transmitter.

The TradeMe auction mentioned:

"Audio in/audio out rear plugs"

So, in theory, it should work, because your MP3 player will effectively have RCA line level outputs when connected via the adaptor cable you ordered.

There are two possible flaws with this argument:

- The seller of the Sony head unit might not have been correct when they mentioned "Audio In ... rear plugs"
- There may be no AUX button on the front panel of the head unit to enable those inputs to be used, but I think it would be unlikely, as they must be there for some purpose, unless they are in fact outputs instead of inputs.

When do you expect to receive the Sony head unit?

Some time this week - I'll check it then. I haven't ordered the cable yet, just in case.
