Dunnersfella: If it was for someone older, a 32GB iPod Touch would be ideal.
But if they're young, an 8GB device will allow them to keep almost everything they want, as well as the valuable lesson re: managing their data.

And re: buying on Apple's store...
I wouldn't buy new, as the 8GB is a loss-leader in most retail stores (JB's / Warehouse / Hardly Normal).
32GB / 64GB isn't picked on much in comparison... and engraving would be cool I suppose?

Good points. For someone young who may also damage it, then yes I guess an 8GB one is good option.

8gb is more than enough...how many songs can you listen to in a day? :)

It does a heck of a lot more than just play music. In fact I hardly use mine for that, it is an iphone without the phone part. Some apps and game are nearly half a gig by themselves.

I'm giving serious thought to selling my 16gb nano and 8gb touch 4g, and replacing them with a 32gb touch - the nano is a nice little device (and I really like the pedometer app) but i'd prefer to just have a single device to carry around. Also, while 16gb holds a lot of music - just under 4000 songs converted to 128kbs AAC - the extra 8gb would mean that little bit more variety generating playlists on the fly. The only downside to using a touch for music is that it's not really as pocketable (and the nano's clock app and album-covers are so *cute*).
